I've left my camera in the car a couple times. Even with the window part way down. Now there was also two German Shepherds in there with it.

I would get a good compact point & shoot to carry around everywhere as an alternative to my D90.

What point & shoot do other DSLR users like? I'm thinking of a Canon PowerShot A2000 IS. Any other suggestions? I'd like something compact that I can carry anywhere, with good image quality, and fast startup & recycle time (other P&S cameras I've used are very slow). I'd also prefer one that uses standard AA batteries. The only thing I don't like about the A200IS is lack of manual controls.

Default would you leave Camera in car

I carry my camera with me everwhere. I keep my camera in my camera back pack in a cooler, where it will stay out of the heat or cold.
Don't want to miss the great shot.

Default I do it, but...

I generally always take my camera with me, and when I have to, I leave it in the car on the floor in the back. I drive a cross-over (or small suv). However, if it happens to be very cold, I generally will not use it until it has had a chance to warm back up to "normal" operating temperatures. Likewise, if it is hot, I will let it cool, If it is extremely hot, I try to plan not to bring it at all, and just kick myself, for all the opportunities that I missed.

I wonder what all this does to the sensor. Can anyone comment on this?

Dianne

Smile My Camera Never Leaves My Body!

Whoops, that's the darn phone that has a stupid camera in it......

Nope, don't leave the camera in the car if not out on assignment....can't risk losing my tools, not to mention around $15000 in gear.

You might have secure surroundings at work, but what about when you "stop somewhere" to catch a bite or do a shopping run? Unless you have good insurance, I would not risk it.

If you are planning to practice as you say, well then, just be careful. But do take it, if you are that into it, go for it.

Weather will effect your gear. The highs and lows of being in a car are extreme and while your gear will hold better than the family pet or child, it will slowly break down. The rubber gaskets and all are even changed by the ozone in the air. Lucky for us not that quick.

I have a small point and shoot camera that I keep in the car, if it gets stolen or breaks down, I am not to hurt. Then if a area or something comes up, I will shoot a scouting shot to look at and if it looks good enough, come back with my gear. Unfortunately, you have to remember to keep the darn battery charged or forget it.

Note: You should keep a camera in your car for accidents, shoot any damage that might have occurred on both cars and that can really help you out in the post process with your insurance company. THAT being said, the camera should probably be one of those disposable ones that are not powered by battery. I have the ones with the flash, if the battery does not work for the flash, the camera still will shoot photos, just no flash.

Good luck

JM

Keep it with you, the photo gods know when you leave it elsewhere. I got myself a nice distressed leather messenger bag put in some padding and its the best. That way it doesn't give away the fact that I have a camera. I also am a member of International Freelance Photographers Organization (IFPO) check them out at www.ifpo.net I have used a number of there services but the best one has been the press credentials, I have been in a lot of places I other wise would not been allowed or wouldn't have been able to take a camera.

I live in Texas and its usually really hot or really cold. I try and take it with me everywhere and I never end up using it, but when I don't have it thats when I always find myself needing it. I still don't like to leave it in any extreme temps.
