My list of freewares that I install on every computer I own is

1. AVG Free Version - free antivirus
2. Superantispyware - spyware
3. PCTools Firewall Plus - firewall with lots of customizations
4. Textpad - an advanced notepad with a block select mode
5. 7-zip - a nice archiver handling both zip and rar formats
6. K-Lite Mega codec pack - plays virtually any kind of AV file
7. Google toolbar - for quick access to wikipedia and numerous other search engines. Also as popup blocker
8. Google Earth - no need to mention why
9. Yahoo Messenger - for voice chat and internet telephony

Adblock Plus (I see no advertisements)
Java Quick Starter

Not really a favorite--in fact, I have no freaking idea how you use it--but I just though it was incredibly cool so I post it here.

Blender. Open source 3D modeling/animation software.

inkista, I've gotta second that one. Blender is fantastic, and is really the only serious free application there is for 3D modeling/rendering/etc.

To a certain extent I do know how to use it.

Firefox for web browsing.

FastStone photo browsing - it opens RAW files & is great for looking thro' folders.

Thinking about it I don't think I use any freeware for my photography/life. I use Adium for IM and Smultron for coding but all my other software I get through macheist or though being a student and being able to get things dirt cheap!

I do use thumbscrew occassionally though:

I use bridge/photoshow raw/photoshop for editing photos.

You certainly do! Now what I gotta figure out is how to use my equirectangulars for lighting.... I suppose I could always mirrorball remap one and pretend it's a lightprobe, but that just doesn't seem right....

xhan, have you tried Eclipse for coding? Well, for those things that you can't do on XCode. I've been using Eclipse and EclipseXSLT for writing XSLT to transform XML files, and while it ain't pretty, it works. With the right module, you can develop in just about any computer language you care to in the Eclipse IDE.

Somebody mentioned GIMP on here: For the money (free), it's tough to beat. It gets compared to Photoshop quite a bit, and understandably so, but it's not a PS clone. It's its own app.
I try to run Ubuntu as my primary system, but as a designer with more than 5 years invested in Photoshop I just can't make the switch to Gimp. I give it a try every now and then as I much prefer using a Linux OS over Windows, but I can't afford the extra time everything takes in Gimp.

If only Adobe would release on Linux! Then I would never have to look at another Windows error screen again!!!

mainak_ch - you're obviously a bit of a geek! K-Lite is pretty much my first download when building Windows machines. If not K-Lite the 7zip. Both sensational packages.

Firefox for sure. Forget IE.
Inkscape is cool for Vector Arts.
I use Avira Antivir, Zone Alarm and Spybot.
