Default Bug Test

This is a photo any biology tome or Nature-oriented book might print. I had intended to title it "Mount in Dew," tonque-in-cheek punster that I am. So I asked the people who make decisions about what's appropriate on DPS, and they felt it was probably OK.

Since I hope never to become too hypocritical, and since I've recently seen photos that I thought were inappropriate for a site that includes very young children and their parents, this is a test of your limits: is either the photo or the title too close to objectionable?

(For anyone unfamiliar with "Mountain Dew," the intended object of the pun, it's a soft drink brand in the US)

thingy,

Exactly! You could help people caption their photos. Or we could petition Nicole to think about a "Caption My Photo" thread. In her spare time.

I'm traumatized! Seriously, any kid with a dog would not see a big deal about this. It's a normal biological process outside the realm of what we could ever ascribe to as sinful or dirty. Otherwise kids wouldn't even be able to watch the Discovery channel or PBS.

rowan,

Nature's uninhibited exhibitionists, dogs. I guess what really concerns me is a child seeing a post with that title and asking questions before the parent wants that information discussed. I don't know, thus the question.

Jiminy, I can't see any issue with your title at all, after all the aforementioned Discovery channel and most other natural history programmes use the word mount as a very polite way of saying something that has a whole phrasebook of words to describe it.

John.

JJthe third,

Thanks for the view. I should watch this Discovery Channel, it sounds educational, but with naughty bits (apologies to Monty Python).

I think it is a terrible picture to post here. I mean, your highlights are blown and everything, man! What kind of edumication is that, eh?

wulf,

This is step one in my nefarious plot. If it truly is not offensive, I'll fix it up some. Then birds and bees with high heels, who knows . . .

Hi JiminyC,

As a mom with small children, I will say that in no way was I offended and I am a strong believer in monitoring what my kids do/see on the internet. I'd personally be fine with my kids seeing that photo and the caption. Mine are young enough that they would not, perhaps, "get" the witty gist of the caption, and would ask me about it. Being the clever mom that I am (and "clever" is required of all parents), I would either make something up to explain it in a benign way, or matter-of-factly note that that's how bugs make other bugs, explain your caption, and then my kids would shrug and go play. No harm, no foul, I say.
