Default Question of format

I'm just starting to develop this issue, because I only owned an SLR camera before my DSLR. After only a month, I used up 2gb (could have been more, but don't have that much time for photos ).
Also, I was just wondering, what's the differance between a RAW picture format, and the "normal" format that is automaticaly saved as a .jpg? I can see a huge file size differance, but I don't see one when I make the transfer onto my pc.

First of all, I have to say - I feel a LOT better about having "5.15 GB" on my computer hard drive that I haven't burnt onto cd's yet. I've been trying to make myself be really picky, even when it's photos of my kids and delete ones that look almost alike (unless they're like stunning and so awesome there's no way I'd delete it) Can't believe how much more space these take up than with my old camera (P&S) though. I've been using Sony CD-R Music 80 min. cd's. But they're almost $15 for a 20 pack, and it's getting pretty outrageous to store all of these plus burn them for friends/family, etc.

So could anyone tell me what cd's they use for backup that would hold more, cost less, if I should be looking for just data cd's, etc. I really want them in cases, not paper ones, but that's all I really are about.

Thanks!!!

Red face

I had a photography teacher tell me once, "never delete anything, you never know whan you might need it"...and so, I don't. I have about 80GB of pics...but I have to say I am very organized and I have no trouble finding past pictures. I keep them all backed up on an external drive and extra computer, and just keep them in a file that I will remember what is in that folder.

I have to say, I have gone back many of times and needed a picture from a long time ago...so I was happy I didn't delete it..

There's my 2 cents!

Hello ... my name is Uros and I'm and addict ...

...

now seriously ... since I got the 400D on march the 19th I have shot 10280 images ... that's an average of 48.something images per day ... of course seeing that I shoot and keep both raw and jpg the imagecount on the HD is doubled ... so far I got 25 dvd's of backup and appx 50gb on the HD left to archive .. that's of course only the stuff I took with the 400D ... I use both picassa and Lightroom to keep track of my stuff ... for a hobby photographer I guess it's a bit much but I just shoot everything ...

Default Don't Use Folders!

Yipes! Taking digital pictures and then storing them on desktop folders is like trying to play 8 track tapes on your Ipod - don't do it!

I use a program called Memory Manager. It automatically sorts by date and allows me to cross-tag photos for multiple locations while preserving ONE COPY on my hard-drive for fast retrieval. So all my Christmas pictures, for example, are in ONE FOLDER (but sorted and searchable by month or year) and all are also tagged by person. This means I can find all pictures with my two daughter from any Christmas in about 30 seconds. This program also makes an automatic shadow copy on an external hard drive for painless back-ups and has lots of other snazzy features. It's only $40 and includes free upgrades whever there are any.
