Default Hi to you all from Southern California

Hello,

It is a real pleasure to joing this group of photographers. I hope to absorb some of the knowledge I have seen being shared on this site as I browsed around as a "looker". The quality of work/art I have come across here is very impressive!
I have enjpyed taking snapshots for many years and have had a lot of fun doing so. Over the last couple of years I have decided to try and learn how to use a camera the smart way. My usual technique is to point and shoot and mostly miss ! I hope to change that. It's all for fun but I'd really rather get some good images if my camera and myself are capable.
Thanks in advance for any help, suggestions and tips I might get from the members here.

Cheers to you!

Lee

Hi Lee,

I think the main tips are to think about the pictures you are going to take and the pictures you have taken. See how the ideas you have picked up apply to them.... voila, instant (and life-long) learning!

Welcome to DPS.

Wulf

Hi everyone,

I'm Shannon. I live in Washington, DC and I've been lurking around the DPS blog for a long time now, and just recently joined the forum and started posting. I love the site and think this is such a valuable resource!

Photography is my one long-time hobby; I've been known to have many "hobbies of the moment" (as my husband calls them) - from knitting to jogging and everything in between. But photography is the one thing that's stuck since I got my first SLR in high school (I think it was a Minolta Maxxum 3Xi?). I switched to a film Canon about two years ago, and last summer finally took the digital plunge and got a (gently used) Canon 20D. Since then, I've gotten more and more serious about photography every day. Now I think I may officially be addicted - and I'm starting to look into taking formal classes (which I haven't done since high school) and maybe even going "back to school" for real.

So, I'm here to learn from all of you and to challenge myself. I'm excited to be here and can't wait to delve deeper!

Peace,
Shannon

Hello all,

I've just joined the forum as I'm taking more of an interest in photography, particularly as I'm relocating to Canada from the UK (currently living in the north of England) in a months time and I think the photo opportunities in Canada are going to be fantastic!

I've had a digital SLR (a Nikon D70S) for around a year or so now, but only really used the auto mode! I'm slowly venturing in program, aperture priority and shutter priority territory so need as much help and advice as possible!

Cheers!

Welly

Shepdc Hi Shannon, welcome to the "absolutely addicted to photography" forum. Believe me, we know how you feel. Love your "Hands" shot by the way.

Welly We have a lot of people who like to give advice here, so you've come to the right place. We'll help get you out of auto mode.

Hi. My name is Anne. I live in Reno NV and have a Canon Rebel XTi. I love photography but don't feel I'm too good at it. I am looking forward to posting pictures for some real critique. I do belong to another site where I post pictures but don't feel I really get honest critiques in order to help me learn

Default Trying to figure out the site.

Hey there from TX,
I just notice that under my name it says point and shoot. NOT! I use a NIkon D70s most of the time. How do I change this? Is there somewhere on the site to get help starting up? If not you might want to set that up for us "newbies". I look forward to getting input on my work and seeing what others are doing. It is great to be able to get tips from those who have been doing this longer. I use another forum made for us Texans but wanted to expand my "territory". Thank you for putting this together.

I was confused about that at first, as well... but it appears that's a graduated category for how many times you've posted in the forums. You start at "point & shoot" and graduate to "digital SLR" and so-on. So keep participating and you'll get there!

Tinlaydie Welcome to DPS. Were you able to get your posting figured out? Hope we'll be able to help you with your photography skills.

Txmama Shepdc was right about the category under your name. In our attempt to use photography terms, we tend to confuse new people to the site. Nice butterfly shot!
