Default Praise...Correct...Praise

The best thing for everyone involved. If they didnt want to share to get others opinions, then dont share. However, if we all can learn from something, that just makes us better photographers in the end.

Well put.

As for sandwiching critiques in praise, I don't do that, and I don't appreciate when others do it to me. This is not an HR review. I want to know how I can improve my craft, and praise helps to do nothing but inflate egos.

That's not to say I don't hand out praise when I think it's deserved, and that I don't appreciate genuine praise, but I don't go out of my way to look for good things to say. Like waffles, this is part of the reason I sorta avoid SYS. I think that if people ask for a critique, they should be ready to accept critique.

I used to be the same way. But praise does help people. It also makes your "negative" comments easier to accept if the person realizes you're not just looking for bad stuff to say. And you can learn from the good things you do as well. Maybe the person did something well without realizing it was significant. If you point it out to them that can be very educational.

I can easily switch from photographer to picture taker and back again. Mostly for work, I have to take snapshots, because I'm documenting something on film (digitally). I don't think about composition, or anything else like that, I just take a snap shot.

When I shoot for myself, then I think about everything I should, and take photographs.

I'll bet a dollar to a stale donut that your 'snapshots' are 300 times better taken photographs than the stuff I've seen from the people I'm talking about. The two guys that I know that bought identical Olympus DSLRs have no idea about any other modes than auto and have no desire to learn. Which makes me want to ask them why they bought such a versatile camera if they don't intend to use it to more than just standard P&S capability.

Like I said, I LOVE the knowledge I've gotten from reading these forums and don't regret it one bit. I've gone from something I liked in photography to something I LOVE to do. I'm thankful for that.
