Question Lens Hoods

Do you guys use lens hoods? I usually keep mine backwards on my lenses in case I do want to use them, but I was wondering, how often, if at all, do you guys use them?

Also, does using a lens hood mean that you have to up the ISO or that you get a slower shutter speed? Because I find that it does, sometimes.

To tell the truth, I don't currently have one. Something happened to the one I had, and I've just not replaced it. How often have I really needed it?

Any timwe you have a source of light in front f the camera, anywhere, not just in the field of view, light enters the lens at an angle and bounces around inside the lens. This will reduce contrast and mute colors. This will be odserved as a slight "fog" on the image. A worse case will be huge flair spots. Flair spots are usually connected to the light source being in the lens coverage area.

Anyway a lens hood will reduce outside light increasing color and contrast.

Lens hoods also make great lense protectors.

I wish I had one, but I don't. Both the lens that I have didn't come with one. If it becomes necessary do prevent the fogging, I'll just use my hand.

Oh, just to ask, does the Canon 50mm f1.8 or 50mm f/1.4 include a lens hood?

Good words. I have planned to get one sooner or later. I just haven't done it.

Guess I should think about having mine with me all the time. I should see if I can do what FileManager does... and see if it will fit on backwards... so its always there!

I always use a lens hood. If the lens doesn't come with one, I order it at the same time that I order the lens. I keep them on the lens backwards except fot the 10-22 which is so wide it won't fit in the case so I store it separate.
Aside from protecting against light rays it protects the lens from bumps and falls.

I just got the Canon 50mm 1.8 and it did not come with a hood.

Click on the link to download a printable one.

My "No" reason isn't up there. I don't use them for the most part because the only lens I have with a lens hood is my 70-300. When I'm using that I'll sometimes use it though. But otherwise, it's "no, because I don't own any for the lenses I use most "
