Like Nicole, I couldn't find my answer there either. I use them on the lenses that have them, but if it didn't come with a lenshood then I go without.

So far, the poll suggests that we are in the minority. And I really figure I should be using a lense hood. I just haven't gotten around to buying them. And it does make it slower for me to get stuff out of the camera bag and be ready to shoot, and my bag is too tight as it is, to have the hoods already on the lenses. So I'd have to put them on afterwards. Slows me down. Eventually, I'll get the wrong angle though, and I know I need the hood.

Pffft!! Lens hoods are for middle aged men that can't afford a fancy sports car!!

Sooo, I use one all the time!

Exception to the rule: When using a circular polarizer. The lens hood gets in the way & you don't really need it anyways because the sun should be to your right or left approximately 90 degrees for the polarizer to be effective.

Hey! Thanks Digidave - I was JUST about to post, to ask about how people handle the lens hoods with the polarizer, so your timing was perfect!

Here, in SUNNY Southern California, I use the polarizer a lot, and have always found it a major pain, when I wanted to use the hood. I didn't realize that it was most effective at 90 degrees, so you answered 2 questions in one.

Literally, the rule of thumb is, point your index finger at your subject & aim like it was a gun barrel & your thumb is the trigger. Palm up or palm down, your thumb will point to where the sun should be when using a polarizer.

I will join Nicoles club. I have one and use that infrequently on my telephoto.

Reference CPL and lens hoods.

I know some folks that have placed a small hole in the lens hood to be used in adjustments. My method is I have a cheap rubber screw-in kens hood for each CPL. That way I have a big handle to adjust the CPL.

That sounds like an interesting idea! Do you have any links to such a beast? I'm assuming it would screw into the CPL & as long as you turn it clockwise, it wouldn't unscrew itself. Have you had any problems getting one off of the CPL?
