Saralonde has excellent points. One time I didn't bring my camera to work, and I passed some guy standing under an overpass in a heavy rainstorm with a broken down car. It would have been a terriffic shot, probably one of the best I'd ever taken, and I still kick myself to this day about it because the scene is so clear in my mind.

I haven't been photographing as much as I used to, but I'm trying to create new habits with my new daily routines. I walk everywhere, so in theory, there's always a chance for shots. I try to remember to take my P&S out of my bag and put it into my coat pocket when I'm walking home or whatever. That way it's always right there. I've also been trying to take a picture or two every day (or so... even though I don't upload a lot of them) out the window of my office. Other than that, the rest of my pictures are taken during evenings and weekends since that's when I have more time.

I also seem shy with my camera in busy places.
I hope that i will generally get over this, im ok at fairs and shows but general street stuff i find hard. |

Like most...I work during the day and have a schedule and a commute that basically eliminates any chance of practicing during my work days...though I did get a great shot of the moon one night.
What I've been doing is taking small road trips with my parents. I've also look around for photographic opportunities in my daily commute and I've seen a couple that I do plan on going out and taking but I'll often just postpone these photowalks and end up missing a shot...like there was this chair that was chained to a gate which was definitely a great photo but it no longer exists

I think people get too hung up on having subjects to shoot. I got most of my practice at work. During the downtime I'd just shoot whatever was handy. For example, I learned all about metering modes from shooting the flourescent light hanging over my head.

Very nice series of shots Jiminy and you and Saralonde are definitely right. It is a fun and challenging idea. It was one of the first assignments we received when I was in a Digtal 1 class. The instructor called it "The Thing Itself," but that was the gist of it. Pick a "thing" and photograph it in as many ways as you could think of. Different angles, above it and below it if possible. Look for shapes, patterns, angles, reflections etc. It is surprising what you can find of interest in the most mundane things if you look at it long enough and from a variety of perspectives. Things we pass every day without giving them a second glance.
Another assignment we were often given was a neighborhood one called "9 pictures." This was a weekly assignment. Simply put take 9 pictures around your neighborhood. One week it might be 3 showing time (time of day, time of year etc.), 3 showing color, 3 showing detail. The following week it might be 3 pictures that represent "hot," 3 that represent "cool", 3 black and whites. It went on for weeks with different sets of 3, but it opened our eyes to the photographic opportunities within your own neighborhood. I usually carry some kind of camera with me. Often it is just the Point and Shoot on a belt clip or in my glove box, but I have really been trying to get in the habit of taking one along at all times.
