This is an interesting thread to read. Though if not for digital, I wouldn't be able to get into photography.

I've read about a local online group of digital photographers (with varying levels of experience) who met-up one gloomy rainy day along (many consider to be precarious) streets of old Manila. The photo challenge for the day: prove that "it's not the camera, but the eye behind the viewfinder..." Each one was given the same kodak disposable film camera, all to be submitted for uniform processing at the end of 3 hours. Some interesting shots came out, afterwards one of them took out his dslr and asked a young vagrant boy on the street to take their group photo.

Sounds like an interesting activity to try.

Here's a linkto the winning photo (bottom of page 6) but the others are posted in the same thread too (starting on page 4).

kabayan! yeah, i heard about this and i found that story to be a very good "humbling" experience to those who let "money take pictures for them". right now, i don't have a camera. i sold my beloved s3IS, due to financial constraints, and am relying on whatever i can get my hands on (my friends have the usual 3-5mp point and shoots, canon, kodak, etc. - so i work with whatever comes my way. i am always the designated photographer for the day... lol)...

and i find it a very humbling experience. i am forced to think way out of the box and it is always a good feeling when i see some of the shots i took and get compliments from those who see them. don't get me wrong, i am starving myself to death to get a second hand d80 soon, or maybe even just a d60, but that has not stopped me from taking pictures. i know if i save enough that i'll get what i deserve soon enough. here's a sample of what i took with a canon a410 (well, i had a slave flash a managed to make that work with the a410... funny):

My only experience with darkroom work was when I was in college. It was the highlight of that part of my life. I spent hours and hours there and never felt the time pass.

I also remember the excitement of getting pictures back from the lab and relishing the moment of discovery. Even though most of them sucked, it was a thrill just to see what my eye and my camera had captured.

Unfortunately, it was also a very expensive hobby for me. I'd always dreamed of having my own darkroom and taking all the pictures that I wanted. I never could, but with the advent of digital photography, my dream came true. I can now take as many pictures as my heart desires and I have a darkroom right on my computer. What more could I ask for?

I feel so lucky to be living at this moment in time. The digital revolution has made me a very happy hobbyist. Heck, it's made me feel like a photographer.

Now, I would go back to film just for fun.
