Non-photo related PS question
Photoshop CS4, on a Mac:
Is there any way to convert a SHAPE into a PATH.
I know the standard way of doing things is to go from path to shape, and thats easy, but is it impossible to go the other way around without re-drawing the shape as a path using the pen tool?

From what I understand, you're kinda asking the same kind of question as converting a JPEG into RAW. Basically, a shape is a bunch of dots. A path is set of instructions like a program, it's a relationship between several points that is scaleable.. It's exactly what it sounds like.. A square could be the information saying "Face south, take 10 steps, turn right 90 degrees, take 10 steps, turn right 90 degrees, take 10 steps, turn right 90 degrees and take 10 steps" which means that if you increased the size of each step, the picture looks exactly the same. With a shape, you're only information is the x and y coordinates of each pixel, and since they're no longer related, putting a path in place is impossible, because you would have to put a path in place between each individual pixel, and since the pixel coordinates are rough positions, when you scale it up, even if it is converted to a path, you're going to have hundreds or een millions of instructions and a wobbly line.
Hope that makes sense?

Not at all: shapes are vector items made from paths. A shape is just a filled in closed path. Thats why I wanted to know if there was a way to just get the path that makes up the outline of a shape.
It appears that it isnt.

That's how I would have had to do it.
The trick here is that when you convert the shape to a selection, you lose some acuity. I tried just using the selection but it always looked feathered no matter what I did.
In the future:
From a shape: Right click -> make selection -> paths tab in layer window -> bottom: "Make work path from selection. That yields a path like what I needed.

It's easier than that:
1. Select the shape that you want.
2. Select the "Paths" drawing mode. (It's one of the choices on the menu bar to the right of the preset picker.)
3. Draw the shape.
4. Select the Paths panel. You'll find the shape is the current work path.
5. Optionally save the path.
Don't forget to change the drawing mode back to whatever you're used to, or if you're like me you'll be mystified by the behavior the next time you use the shape tool.
