* if you shot the images with a DSLR, most likely the image aspect ratio is 2x3. So, any enlargements that follow that aspect ratio (as in 4x6, 8x12, 16x24, etc) can be printed without any loss of image data. Understand, if you crop to aspect ratios that are not 2x3, such as 8x10 or 11x14, you will lose some part of the image on it's long dimension
* if you are a member, Costco can print quite nice enlargements that are very cost effective. For example: $2.99 for an 11x14
* many department stores sell simple frames off the shelf that will not break the bank..many come with precut mats

Hope this helps
I shot these photos in the highest JPEG settings 3264 x 2448. I didn't want to go too large on the prints, they'll be hanging together as a set (I hope)

I was wondering if an off the shelf frame and mat would be ok or if I would look like the country cousin if I didn't go custom framing..I will do that, buy three matching frames from a department store..

thank you for the indepth response. I really appreciate the help.

Another note, off the shelf frames with precut mats to accommodate 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, 16x20 images are a dime a dozen, and readily available. As I mentioned above, however, none of these sizes are the 2x3 aspect ratio that your camera produces. So, any crop done to those sizes in post will cause some loss in the image. If you want to maintain the entire image without loss, like an 8x12, you may not find too many stores carrying that size frame and mat off the shelf, and may be faced with having to go to the custom framing route. Just one more thing to think about.

good point. I have tried resizing them to 8 X 10 and don't like them...so I'll run by some of the hobby shops and see what is available before I print them for the exhibit. I would rather go the 8 X 12 size

Odd. When you click on Categories, that page is black and white. When you click a Previous Story those pages are black and dark gray. For me anyway...

I don't know if you're in the states or not, but I've found that places like Michael's and A.C. Moore (craft stores that offer custom framing) tend to have a larger selection of non-standard frame sizes than most department stores. Michael's in particular runs a lot of sales, and I see a 50% off coupon almost every Sunday in the paper.

First off, congratulations on being selected to display. How exciting! Would you be allowed to post here the photos selected to display? I probably speak for others when I say we would like to see them.

And to add to what Mindy Rae suggested about craft stores for discount on photo frames -- watch for discounts on custom framing if that is the route you have to take. Not sure if you can find any discounts to meet your time criteria at this point, but keep it in the back of your mind for future reference.

Bottom line, have fun and bask in the recognition.

There is nothing in the rules about NOT sharing them so here is one of them

I have thing for abandoned houses and have a whole collection of these I have taken around East Texas.

Ask first--they outsource the frame jobs (they're done by some company in Texas--least that's what they told me when I tried to get some free mat scraps) so make sure you'll have everything back before the deadline.

Very nice. I like the way the dark foilage frames the house. Great subject for black and white. Photos like this always make me wonder about the inhabitants. Thank you for sharing.

that's what always attracts me to these houses..the thought of who built them and who lived in them. All that history just gone as if the inhabitants never existed. Where are their descendents now if they have any? when was the last time that the people pulled that door to and walked away? Someone built that house with a lifetime of hopes and dreams and all of them lost..

the famous people, the mansions, their stories are preserved, we can tour their houses and see how they lived..they live on in our memories but the ordinary man and woman fade away like the houses do. The pics I really liked myself didn't make the exhibit, the houses that have almost been swallowed back up by the brush or fallen back to the ground they came from.
