Default OT: The Humane Society

Very very off-topic, but bear with me. It's also a bit spammy, but it's for a good cause.

Everybody likes animals. Sometimes people like animals but cant take care of them. Thats where the Humane Society steps in. Unfortunately the Humane Society here in Mississauga is hard up for money: they don't have an actual shelter so they're stuck using foster-families for the animals and that's expensive as they cover all their food and vet bills.

A friend of mine was approached by the MHS to help raise some money, and she asked me if I could do anything. I'm helping in every way I can, but figured I could ask you people. If you go to www.streetsvillestarlight.com and click "Tickets", there's a paypal donation box.

Anything helps, so if you can make any kind of contribution, it'll be appreciated.

We're having a gala-like evening on April 5th and I'll be able to report back on any progress then.

Thanks all.

(Anyone in the GTA: If you're free the evening of April 5, definitely think about coming out. It's being held in Streetsville, in Mississauga, at the Old Barber House (401 W, off at Mississauga Rd, south down Mississauga Rd into Streetsville, on the left.) It'd be great to get the word out as much as possible in the GTA, so feel free to spam either the website or the FB page even if you can't make it.)

The fostering arrangement is actually better for everyone, including the animals. Why? 1. The shelter would have to pay the expenses of housing them anyway.
2. The animals adapt better in a foster home than in a cage at a shelter.
3. Space is less limited by a single facility.
4. Animals can spend longer in a foster situation than they can in a cage without growing cage weary and developing behavioral problems that would cause them to be considered "unadoptable" in most cases. We all know what that means . . .

Sounds like you've got some things going already, but you can also:

1. Take "adopt me" portraits of the adoptable animals.
2. Hold a portrait fundraiser where folks bring their pets for portraits and the session fee or portion of it goes back to the rescue.

Most importantly, remember that local Humane Societies are NOT IN ANY WAY connected to Humane Society Of The United States. HSUS is a huge sham that doesn't support the things that their cuddly, fuzzy commercials lead the public to believe.

Amen to that. I got all three of our cats from The Animal Center and as many of you know, I photograph many of their adoptable animals.

LOVE the idea of doing a portrait fundraiser, Jim! I just may have to chew on that idea for a while and see if it's feasible.
