For you urbex fans...
"Stairwells strewn with debris and walls crumbling slowly to dust, it is the island that New York forgot for 50 years. Now, in a series of extraordinarily eerie pictures, the lost world of North Brother - quarantine zone, leper colony and centre for drug addicts - has been brought back to life. It is hard to believe that these echoing corridors and abandoned halls were home to hundreds of patients - or that a criss-cross of tree-lined avenues were once roads. But the haunting quality of these pictures makes it easy to imagine that it was a place of indescribable misery, which one inmate compared to the notorious black hole of Calcutta." Would be fun to see what kind of access rules they have. From what Ive been able to find, Harbor Patrol guards it fairly carefully. It'd be interesting to know if the city has anything in place.

It's hard to believe this place is only a quarter-mile away from the Bronx. However, only the birds have access now...
"Closed in 1963, it is now a haunting labyrinth of crumbling ruins.Protected birds are its only inhabitants and the waters around the island are patrolled by armed coastguards who ensure the sanctity of the former quarantine zone is never violated."

You'd think the "horror" movie makers would jump on this location.
TFS - very interesting!

My wife loves places like this to shoot...the closest we've been able to find is The Bennett's School For Girls in Millbrook, NY, also in a terrible state of ruins. A turn of the century victorian style school gone bust in mid 1970. Google it....
Thanks for sharing this Krusty

Miru Kim On one hand, I'm impressed because it's something different and I wouldn't have the guts to do that. On the other, I'm grossed out and wonder how in the hell she didnt get some weird infection in or on her punani. Love the OP link. I'd kill to be able to find someplace like that that I could sneak into and take urbex pics. There was a show on one of those cable channels way up in the 100's that was a group of guys that did exactly that all over Europe. I loved it, but the shows started repeating and I lost interest. |

Thanks Krusty for posting this.
I've always been attracted to places in their run down state. I've been lucky to photograph an old abandoned textile mill, a school, and several houses. I like imagining the history and the stories that these places tell. I find myself apprehensive when approaching them for the first time but once I am inside the photo adrenaline takes over. |
