Default DVD authoring: US->UK

So I know there are some pretty tech-minded folks here who can answer this question simply for me. Google just spat a bunch of seemingly contradictory answers at me.

So my folks are old and don't play the computer game. They are technologically advanced so as to have a DVD player however. Rather than than having to print photobooks, or sending my old ones to them, it occurred to me to just make them DVDs.

The suite i'll be using to do this will simply be the software that comes with Win7, I"m not so into this project as to buy anything bigger or better. I understand I can create titles/menus blah blah snore so it should suffice.

What do I have to do as far as formatting to make sure it will play in the UK, just make sure it's in PAL as opposed to NTSC, or is it more indepth than that?

TIA

Right, if they use PAL you'll want to author the DVD in that format, it's a different resolution than NTSC. Supposedly a PAL DVD player will be more likely to be able to play an NTSC disc than an NTSC player could play a PAL disc, but if you know where it's going I'd just assume put it in the native format. The other thing that may be causing confusing is region-locking, but that applies mostly to commercial DVD's as a type of DRM. You should be able to author a personal DVD as region-free.

PAL and NTSC don't really come into it anymore given the introduction of digital/HD. However, you'll find that 99% of US/UK gear will support both (and many others). Still, having said that, most, if not all, DVD players these days will support JPEG on a DVD, so you could literally just stuff them on a disc as you would usually and play away.

If they are just photos, why wouldn't you do either jpeg or save as a PDF.

Cheers,

... also, personally, - like computer monitors - for best results I'd match the resolution of the images to the native resolution of their TV, if you know it.
