Default Notebooks for travel

A colleague of mine is travelling from Australia to the US next year and has a travel back up hard drive. However he wanted something he could view his RAW files, so was looking at an Epson P7000, however this is astronomical here - over $700!

So we were thinking of a little light notebook.

Any recommendations please?

Ta in advance.

For travel, I use a small Acer One Netbook. It doesn't take much room, the battery last nearly 3 hours and it backups my memory card.
Works like a charm if you don't use it for editing.

Thanks Marc. He has a laptop, just didn't want to lug it around, and also did not want to be tempted to start editing his photos.... he is on holiday with his wife and daughter!!

This one has a 10" screen so it's easy to carry, is not powerful enough for serious editing (less temptation ) and can be had for about 250$ when it's NOT on sale. And it often is.
But you can at least review your pics on a decent screen.

You can view raw files on an iPad.

A MacBook Air might be a nice choice, but it's more than the P7000.

I've got a P7000, and just don't recommend it. I'll probably sell mine someday if I can even find it again.

My wife got me a Asus Transformer Prime w/dock for my belated Christmas present. This thing is amazing. 16 hours battery life and an SD card slot so I can just take my card out of my camera and pop it in the tablet to view all my images.

Tablet with dock is a little less than the P7000 but still might be more than you care to spend (approx. $650 USD).

This is my travel strategy.
I have an Acer netbook with nothing (almost) personnal on it, so I use it as a backup device and to review the daily pictures.
And if something happens to the netbook not a big loss.
Just looking for basic stuff in the pictures like focus, framing and light. No corrections.
And I also do a second backup to an external drive.
Whats good is the external drive will fit in every hotel safe, and sometimes the pc also fits in the safe.
So normally I end up with 3 copies of my pictures while travelling including the originals on the memory cards.
And the whole thing is quite light, do not take much room and easy to carry around.
And in an hotel room a more than 2 years old very small netbook is not that interesting for stealing.( even if I keep it locked)
