Jon, the only differences between the D3 and the D700 is the frame rate and the 5:4 aspect ratio. Otherwise they are vitually the same - same picture quality and the D700 picks up the frame rate with the grip and an EN-EL4a battery. I wouldn't count on the grip of the D800 being the same as the D7000, but you never know. I'd like the D3 all-in-one body too, but I would not buy one with a high shutter count and would take a D700 with a low or zero count anyday. The Nikon grip on my D700 seems nice and sturdy fwiw.
