Smile Photoshoot Help?

Hey guys I've recently moved into the small city of Wagga Wagga NSW Australia, and I would love to do a town photoshoot. I'm looking for models and also ideas for poses and props that are good for town shoots. I'm relatively new to photography, and don't have a good camera, but it doesn't mean I'm not good. Well, all my friends tell me I am
So if anyone's interested in modelling, or can help me with ideas, I'd appreciate it
Oh and I don't have my driver's license yet so it has to be near the main street or theres a couple of really nice streets nearby with old houses and stuff. Any ideas would be appreciated !

A. What a cool name! Wagga Wagga. Now I wanna move to Wagga Wagga!
B. When you say town photoshoot, what do you mean specifically? I'm assuming you want to shoot street portraits of people, am I correct?
It's also help us if you were more specific about what kit you have, or can get.
Also, it'd help us help you if you told us what your end goal is. Do you have a particular intent/goal/style you're trying to achieve?

First, I hope you've got some of the basics covered. Ie you're not simply sitting on Auto settings?

Second, I can almost guarantee you'll need to have some knowledge about lighting if you're looking to shoot outdoors, so start looking into that if the most you know is your pop-up flash. What I mean by this is do you know why "Open shade" is important? Do you know how to use flash, even if it's 'just' judicial use of "fill-flash" with your pop-up. Do you know about reflectors and their value? Shooting outdoors involves a lot of thinking/knowledge about lighting if you want to take the best possible images. Do you know why it's not a good idea to shoot in the middle of the day?

For finding ideas about poses, you ought to spend some time doing searches on flickr. I'd suggest using combinations of words like portrait, urban, street, city, etc etc. There's just too much possibility for us to simply tell you "try x, y, and z" especially when we don't know what you're going for.

I have no idea what sorts of "props" would be good for a "city photoshoot" maybe someone else can help you.

As for finding models.. have you tried modelling sites such as Modelmayhem?

Make sure you have a contract/model release form detailing exactly what you plan on doing with the images to cover your ass legally.

And, as I always preach to people of all levels of skill, make sure you are prepared! Show up knowing what you want to do. Know your limitations. Do NOT show up and just try to wing it, you'll kill your reputation if you have any of your models sit around as you're thinking of ideas or fiddling with your camera because you don't know what you're doing. Just be prepared... which I guess is the point of your post, to start along that process.

If you can give us more detail we can probably be more specific.

And welcome to DPS by the way, it's a helpful community. You'll learn a lot especially if you're willing to not always hear only positive commentary.

Good luck with this project.

Welcome to DPS,

I can't help you specifically Shakes, but just so you know: when confronting anyone in Wagga Wagga one must utter, "Oh dearie me."

I saw this advice on a Spike Milligan special on the tele. He was visiting his parents there quite a few years back and that's what he said everyone in Wagga Wagga utters.

So if you see a nice looking girl who fits the bill for your photoshoot, say, "Oh dearie me, I need a model. Would you like to model for my photographs."

Hope this helps

Good luck with your project and please, don't take this advice. Or do, you never know.

If you like the sound of Wagga Wagga you'll love Australia! They've got all sorts of weird place names over there, like Wollongong, Mullimbimby, Wanneroo, Humpybong, Poowong, Smiggin Holes, Loos, Brisbane, Sydney.........
And my personal favourite Mt Buggery!

No Bruce, I think Spike Milligan's parents were at Woy Woy.

Woy Woy, New South Wales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Its not far from Kurri Kurri and just down the road from Gol Gol. Gumley Gumley is near Wagga Wagga.

My claim to fame is:

Wood Wood, Victoria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Woy Woy, Wagga Wagga - what's the difference. I live at Mudgeeraba (aboriginal for sticky mud or sticky sh*t).

Lick that!

One of my faves is Bong Bong. (About 120km or 75miles south west of Sydney), but not as the crow flys.
