Aperture if you're on a Mac.

Depending on what your needs are (catalog, database, image editor, etc) various programs might fit the bill.

Breezebrowser
PhotoMechanic
Etc

GIMP will be your best option for open-source software by far. It doesn't have all the features and capabilities of PS or Lightroom, but it will be most feature-filled image editor you will find for free.

GIMP is more analogous to PS than it is for Lightroom however, since Lightroom is more geared toward editing image exposure and generally streamlining workflow, whereas PS and GIMP are full raster image editors capable of heavy image manipulation.

More akin to Lightroom would be the software bundled with Canon or Nikon cameras capable of editing RAW format images. It's Digital Photo Professional for Canon, I don't recall the name of the Nikon version... But those have options to quickly rate your images for keepers and deletions, quick adjustments to contrast and colors via curves, sharpness, saturation, etc.

You could look at Paint.net, too -- not nearly as powerful as some other options, but it's free and easy to use.

Why not go for LR? You'll have to eventually, right? Why wait!?

Lightroom isn't that complicated. In fact- with the presets built into it, you basically import, click once in develop and then export et voila!

It can be a simple program, or it can be a bit more complicated- but playing around with all the features is a great way to learn!

Don't sell yourself short- you can do it!

Darktable looks promising, but there's not a Windows version (and I don't know what installing on OS X is like): darktable | the photo workflow software

RawTherapee could be good for editing, although I'm pretty sure it doesn't do the cataloging that Lighroom does: RawTherapee Blog
