Default Protection Plans???

Do you normally buy the protection plan for each camera or lens you purchase? I'm never sure what to do.

Never. Generally, anything bad that happens to my equiptment is due to my own human error. Dropping, water damage, etc. Protection plans NEVER cause self-inflicted damage.

The manufacturers warranty against defects is usually sufficient, and I believe Nikon's is 5 years anyways.

I haven't for my lenses because I'm a complete klutz (and may have dropped my first one into a wine kit and destroyed it) Mind you, I have never spent more than $300 on a lens.

I did get a 3 year in store warranty for my camera body and it has saved me twice now.

If you want insurance, buy from an insurance company, not a camera store.

Never But then a. those protection plans don't exist in this part of the world and b. the warranties that come with the camera aren't always honoured here, either, so why would anyone have any faith in a protection plan?

Only people that are tight on money waste their money on these things. Odds are your item will never fail - well eventually but you will have upgraded by then. If you insure every single one you will spend much more money on the slim chance that one or two of these things will ever die. Just self insure, it is always cheaper in the long run.
