Default I found the BEST way to photograph birds!!!

Step 1. Take it out of the freezer and let it thaw...

Serious.. how do you guys get those shots of birds?!?! There were so many bird photos lately I decided to try my hand at it today. After chasing sparrows down like a total idiot and worried what the neighbors think of me I learned something. Flowers don't move

I have a dead pheasant, really pretty, should try and prop it up like in those old style, 1800s post-death photos. LOL

Flowers do move....a little or a lot, depending on the breeze. Try hummingbirds. Those little guys drive me crazy! I so want to get some decent shots, but it never works out as good as I envisioned. Dogs however, are usually pretty good subjects. Mine never runs away, or gives me that "I wish you'd find a new hobby that doesn't involve me" look, or puts his paws out in front of his face. LOL I think I'll stick to dogs.

Lol this made me laugh. On a serious note though "odd for me", how long of a lens are you using? I find that I can get pretty decent bird shots with my 55-250 as long as they're far enough away for me to track them with my camera lol.

I started out with my 18-55 kit lens but then moved to my 60mm macro lens

I found flowers much easier to shoot.

I guess I just don't have the patience for bird photography. I quit when it crossed my mind to pull out Hubby's hunting rifle

If you're getting out of focus shots on the birds, it could be because Macros tend to focus slower than normal.

As for your other comment, I think shooting a bird either way can be fun lol.

The only problem with step 1 is you tend to get lifeless photographs.

------------------------------------------

Serious..

(1) Patience
(2) Good camera technique.
(3) A long lens does help a lot but is not always necessary.
(4) An eye for composition.
(5) Lots of practice.
and

Do not worry about what others think.

It could be hilarious. Get some old dolls clothes, dress the poor thing up and add a sepia tone in post.

Just don't tell the PETA police

Unlike other birds, THIS bird did not meet its end by my hand. It ran into a wall on a hobby farm and killed itself (seriously, it did). I'm just... recycling.
