I back up all my images on the computer, external HD and am using Carbonite (will most likely not renew).
I know many of you store all your photo files on Flickr. If I send all my images to Flickr, I can upload all the files and sort them into private folders? Any other "cloud" reccomendations? I am looking at this JustCloud :: Features It says it is free and unlimited storage. I am not promoting or connected to this in any way. Edit: Any and all reccomendations for 1TB external HD with minimal or no software preloaded. I think I should just be able to drag and drop my photo folder into the drive.

The Justcloud thing is free for two weeks, then there are charges after that - got to read the fine print.
Flickr Pro will let you upload full size originals and keep them so only you can see them if you so desire and you can put them into sets anyway you want.

One of the things I've been meaning to do when I get some spare cash is to get a networked multi-drive appliance, and just set it up at my mother's house. I can update it from anywhere, and it'll keep copies in a second location for not a lot of money.

That is true that it only saves jpg, but on the plus side it is off site storage. I backup my raws to an eSata external drive as well.

I use a network drive. I do not trust the security of online storage. They can get hacked, go broke or just loose your data.

I bought a pair of 2TB Seagate drives at Costco (not a lot of shopping options here on Kauai). They are both set up on WiFi here in the house and are mirror images of each other. I have a file structure I like set up on one drive, then copied it to the second one. I back up everything to both drives every time I get new photos. I know I sound paranoid with the dual drives, but I have had external drives die before, and I can't afford to lose what is on there. So double back up and I feel safe. Everything goes on those drives. I only keep what I am currently working on in my computer. And the cool thing was I found those drives for sale at Costco, so a total of 4TB for $160 wasn't too bad at all.
The cloud stuff would be nice for easy access anywhere, but I realized I never take my computer anywhere, only the camera. So I would never use it away from home. In the long run, the $160 is cheaper than buying membership to some cloud based storage. And I am the only person with access.

I think I'm making up my mind on what to get, considering my plans for the near future.
- I will get a NAS drive for my home network (Probably iOmega Home Media Cloud Edition 1TB) - I will keep using my Toshiba 750GB USB HDD for backup. - I will get a CrashPlan service for online storage. The reasons for this are: - NAS drive will be easily accesible while connected at home and will keep my backup up to date almost constantly. - CrashPlan client can handle both online backup and local backup, making it a single system to control. - Online backup is slow, but it's off-site and accesible from all over the world. - The portable USB drive adds redundancy to the backup system but will be updated quite less frequently. I will be undergoing a relocation during this year, probably moving abroad, so I don't want to install a full-blown local backup system now, but I do want to keep my data safe, both my pictures (that will take the most of the space) and my other data (documents, e-mail, etc.) |

The next project is to do what edititing I can for the 400+ jpegs converted from slides. I imported them into LR with one of my presets, so just tweeking needed. These are pics of the wife's childhood. Many scratches, blotches, exposure/WB issues. I know they will not turn out as portraits, but at least they will look better and one can actually see who is in the photos. These too will go to Flickr so her family can take what they want.
