Default just deleted 60 gig off my hard drive...

OUCH! I have only had this camera a month

I am going to have to look into an external Hard drive or 2 as putting all of these on CD is going to cost more then a hard drive HA HA

Most are family shots ~ I deleted what I could but really... who can delete photos of their smiling angels opening presents

If you're on a desktop, you could look at internal HD's as well. My secondary HD is 2TB and cost me about $90. And that was for a good one. Oh how I wish solid-state drives were cheaper though...

I was looking at the 2T external ones. Since we do a lot of family trips it would be nice to be able to store the photos on it rather then a laptop. At this rate our laptop will burn a hole in it lol

May I suggest an on-line back up service as well. A fire or thief will still leave you with no images.
I learned the hard way. I dropped a HD while installing a new one to have duplicates of all my images. Lost all of 2006!! Now I have two physical copies (ie 2 HDs) and 2 separate on-line backup services (LiveDrive and Mozy)

Never never never again.

Well the family stuff I get printed because i like to scrapbook. I also upload tons of family photos on flkr, most of which is marked for my viewing only. I also burn everything to disk and keep the CD case in our evac stuff. Living in new orleans, evac and photos go hand and hand lol

I never thought of doing an online backup service. I might do just that now that i am getting more serious into photography. I hate uploading all of my family photos to flkr lol

There are always risks, who hasn't heard of someone with a house fire losing everything? That's a risk we all take. I make a backup of my stuff. I have a furniture item I built a secret compartment into. Its hard drive sized. I put my storage drive in it when I go on vacation, and take my backup drive with me. Normally my backup drive is hidden as well when I'm at work.

I might look into the live drive thing though....

Takes forever to do the initial back-up if you have a boat load of images (I'm over 700gb, but I hoard files especially alternative edits!), but after that it works quietly in the background as I add new files.

And now they've added the functionality that I can actually access and look at/download/share/etc the files from my backups no matter where I am. I can view all my files from my iPhone as well.

Not cheap, but for peace of mind, to me, it's well worth it.

What does it run? All I see is "from 7.95 a month". The 1 tb for me would be plenty. For the price of a few months I could by a stack of DVDs, put all my good pics and my pirated music on them, and just leave the whole thing in the desk drawer at work.

Besides online backup (I upload full size to flickr) I have a RAID10 Array so everything is redundant as it is not if a hard drive will fail but rather when.

If you download a copy of the image you uploaded to flickr does it return you the actual original or the version of the file they converted for their own use? So does that really serve as a backup? If so, great, because I put all the "finals" i like there, even if I make many private. I just wasn't sure, so I didn't want to rely on flickr.
