Default SOPA: Stop Online Piracy Act

Ok,..so my husband is up in arms over this for a lot of different reasons. This though, would directly affect many of us, as well as photographers across the country. Read the entire article and do your own searches on the subject. There's plenty out there about it.

I wanna know what side you stand on. Do you think it's good, or bad?

Stop Online Piracy Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This line on the opposition side especially caught my eye.

"The EFF ( Electronic Frontier Foundation ) has warned that Etsy, Flickr and Vimeo all seem likely to shut down if the bill becomes law. According to critics[who?], the bill would ban linking to sites deemed offending, even in search results and on services such as Twitter."

Censorship is never a good idea.

Suddenly anything they dont want you to talk about is gone.

A Lot of big companies (apple included - who oddly enough are big anti piracy people, they tried to stop jailbreaking as a DMCA violation) are against it.

Horrible legislation.

Agreed. Government needs to stay out of the internet.

But this type of legislation comes up frequently...some congressman thinks it's a good idea to try and regulate the internet. No one ever goes along with it, so it usually gets shot down.

Just another reason Obama and his joke of an administration must go.

Obama's joke of an administration let a Republican introduce a bill in the House? He must go!

In all seriousness, under the Stop Online Piracy Act if I upload a Michael Jackson song to the internet and allow my friends to stream it, I could face five years in prison. The doctor that killed him only face four years in prison.

Well, if the administration wasn't so high on creating federal agencies to regulate the minutiae at such a staggering rate, these bills wouldn't stand a snowball's chance. As it is, Obama has created a very favorable climate for such things.

And heavily lobbied by the s---stain organizations like the RIAA and MPAA. You know, the ones that sued single mothers for thousands of dollars because their daughters downloaded some pop songs.

So basically, get used to seeing this on any number of websites, at the whim of basically nothing, if this passes:

What I wonder, is what are they gonna do about websites that are based in other countries, like this one. The US has no jurisdiction beyond our borders. They cant prosecute someone in another country for a violation, could they?

And really, Obama has nothing to do with this. Besides, I didnt post this to start a political debate. Politics aside, if this bill were to pass, think about the implications that this would cause. It's already made it through the Committee but that doesnt mean much.

It's very bad and sets a precident for screwing and censoring EVERYTHING. It's not so much about what's on the face of it, it's largely about the implications of it going through.

Many big companies have turned their back on the government etc over this.
