After ordering a D700, having delivery confirmed, then being advised it was unavailable for 1-2 weeks, maybe more (this is after payment) I phoned the company and they graciously agreed to cancel the order and refund my payment. Their pricing is great and with Aus warranty through their service agent - so much so I have a new F4 16-28 VRll Nikkor lens on the way from them. Anyway, after stewing in my disappointment we were shopping at a local center today and walked into a well known Aus wide big box chain store (coloured bright yellow) and asked for their lowest price on the D700.
The guy asked what prices I'd been looking at and I mentioned a few on-line importers who were selling at rock bottom prices (similar to my original order). Their price on the D700 was about $2860 which by retail standards here wasn't bad, but way over what I was prepared to pay. He shot off armed with the info I had given him to talk to the manager and came back ten minutes later and gave me a price $40 more than the Hong Kong importers. I was dumbfounded and pounced on the deal as it entailed a full Nikon local warranty. That was the fourth bit of luck after selling three lenses on Ebay after listing them two days ago. Needless to say, I'm feeling quite chuffed right now. Reading through the manual, sorting out the camera's settings and having a wine. All that's left is to sell the D7000 and start getting much more serious about drinking - er no - photography. After I all, I'm really only allowed one red wine a day [grin] - so photography is better for me .

Congratulations.
My sister had similar experiences at the same chain with purchases of a Canon G12 (P&S) & Canon 7D

Thanks Richard and Jon. This thing feels that much better in the hand. I've got what is supposed to be a genuine Nikon battery grip on the way - for $69.00. So it remains to be seen. My cheap grip for the D7000 was a-okay.
Jon, if anything like the D3 and D700 - then the D800 is looking like it might be the real ant's pants.

![]() I'm really not a patient chap. I can't believe I've managed to sit on my hands since August waiting for the D800 to come out, and now they've brought out the D4 ahead of it... I wonder what will happen to the price of D3s's now.. Might end up getting one of those simply because the D4 beat the crap out of them ant they're trying to get rid of their stock.. if I find one for less than $3k, I'm gonna owe my card company some cash!!
