Very true, lots of women abuse kids so its not a man/woman thing.

I also think its a matter of where you live and the environment your kids are in. I am far less concerned when my daughter wants to ride her bike around our block. We live in a small town outside the city and I know pretty much everyone. Its about as close to Mayberry as you can get in this day and age.

However, when we are in the city she is by my side or my hubby's side at all times. In our local town she is allowed to use the public restroom by herself. In the city I still go with her to the restroom.

So location can largely effect these safety rules in place.

They couldn't say it that time and it seemed like more took it to heart and listened a bit closer as they saw first hand how they don't know everything.

Doug, since your a leader too, you might get a kick out of this! My oldest is doing his Eagle project next weekend. Once he has it finished and turned in, he will be 4th generation Eagle Scout for my hubby's side of the family. Everyone (mostly my hubby) is very excited and proud of him.

There are parts of YPT that are a bit over the top, I agree. I just keep in mind how important it is to have a safe environment for both kids and leaders.
Interesting teaching experience, and probably worth doing.

My dad is an Eagle as well (his award was signed by Eisenhower ); I was in Civil Air Patrol instead. My son is just a couple of signatures away from Second Class and has been talking about CAP, too. We'll see where he goes.

Congratulations to your son. Eagle is a notable achievement that he will be able to look back on with pride all his life. And congratulations to you and your husband for raising a son who could earn an Eagle.

I have heard great things about CAP. Sadly we don't have a large group in our area that I am aware of. My oldest is also in AFROTC at school and drill team. That takes up a huge portion of his free time.

Here is a fun video I made of my oldest during the C.O.P.E course at summer camp. This song I picked is "Sexy Thang" but I am sure most will quickly understand the joke and I wasn't calling my son sexy HA HA

This video is so important to my hubby and I. our oldest is a book worm nerdy type. He loves scouts but more for the sciences/social learning parts. He isn't as big on the physical stuff such as heights and survival training. C.O.P.E and repelling was completely out of his comfort zone. A few years ago he refused to do either once he saw how high up that cliff was HA HA this past summer, just short of his 17th birthday, he completed the course. He won't win any repelling medals but everyone was so proud of him!! Our middle son is the hiker/backpacker though.
