Default Any Rum aficionados about?

Just curious to see if anyone here enjoyed good rum. I'm always looking for new suggestions, there are so many varieties of Rum out there. Most of my friends and acquaintances tend to be more into whiskey or tequila.

Oooh, alkeelhol topic! Delicious!

Luckily (or unluckily, don't know) you are outside the US where any rum made in Cuba is not allowed.

For me, Havana Club, which is the real one made in Cuba and not the similar named one made by Bacardi (made in Puerto Rico) , is the best one I had so far. The real Havana Club is not sold in the US (obviously) but is available anywhere else (I think). We can buy them here in Australia, so I am assuming you may be able to purchase them in Japan.

Look for the label and make sure that if you do find it, it's not the one owned by Bacardi and that it says made in Cuba.

That's about all I can advice on the subject

Oh, by the way, if you are planning on making mojitos, one whole lime will make it more delicious as oppose to just a couple of slices. Ah, if you haven't had mojitos, you should

Indeed I have a bottle of Havana Club 7 year at the moment . I haven't made mojitos yet as I have to find some fresh mint first. Though I have to say, I think Havana club is good, but it's pretty far down from my top ranks.

I'd recommend trying Ron Matusalem gran reserva 15 year, Ron Zacapa Centernario 23 year solera as a good place to start - very nice rums neat. The Matusalem is cheaper but the Zacapa is better.

Other good choices are Zaya gran reserve 12 year, Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva and El Dorado 15 year - though are a bit different.(Zacapa XO is really nice - smoother than the centernario, but similar flavor so not a great "bang for buck" choice)

Of course it really depends on what kind of Rum you like - I tend to gravitate towards the dark / gold rums - but I do like a good spiced rum, and occasionally enjoy the white rums

Two of my favourites are:
"Brugal" (Dominican Republic)
and Lamb's "Black Sheep" which is a lot easier to find (and tastes like cinnamon hearts)

Nice, I like cinnamon - I will have to look for that, that will likely be pretty hard to find here though. I recently got some spiced rum called "Kraken" It's nice, though its main spice is clove. It's also pretty strong for rum at 47%

I've seen the Kraken rum in stores here but haven't bothered trying it yet. It caught my eye because I thought it was Cthulu on the label at first.

I'm a huge fan of cloves though so I may have to try some now.

I was introduced to one in Barbados - C TRUE (said in a local accent)
Finally worked out it was See Through, effectively clear moonshine rum stuff... and no, you will not find it in your local store.

(I do share an office with Bicardi's ad agency though, does that count?)

I can confirm that the Dominican rums are pretty delicious.. And they get you really very drunk.. I don't remember much else about them.. I do remember someone thinking it would be a good idea to put a python in my shorts and making comparisons.. But that's about it.. Ah happy memories of my visit to the Dominican Republic.

I don't drink any more so can't help other than that!
