Default Nikon Lenses on a Canon body

I'm getting very tempted by the prices of the Canon EOS 5D mkII. Only I'm a Nikon user, and have a number of very expensive Nikon lenses.. The 70-200 2.8 VR11 being the most, but also the 24-70 2.8 and an 85mm 1.4.

Sooo.. Since I don't really want to sell all my lovely lenses, especially since I would quite like to keep my D7000, I'm wondering if these Lens adapters do what they're supposed to do..

If I got the EOS 5D Mk2 and an adaptor then will all the functions of my lenses work? What I'm mainly concerned about is my G lenses, that don't have manual aperture control, and the VR on the 70-200

Yes, I am seriously considering going over to Canon..

You'll lose VR, AF and, IIRC, automatic aperture control (you get an aperture ring on the adaptor).

The only real lens I'd bother putting on a 5DmkII is the 14-24 or 16-35: all others have very good canon equivalents that would be better as a system.

Think I'll wait for Nikon to pull its socks up then.. There are too many things to lose.. 3 decent flashes and 2 FF lenses I bought specifically because I thought the D800 was coming out sometime in 2011 and a Sigma 150-500 OS that I picked up for a bargin price.

Shame.. but still at least that answers my question.. I'll stop crooning over the 5D Mk2 and try to be patient..

Errrr.... "aperture ring on the adapter" only if you have the 16:9 adapter, and who the #^@$& knows if that guy is actually still making them. Last I heard the wait was over 9 months.

Generally speaking, forget putting G lenses on a Canon with an adapter ring. You have to have an aperture ring on the lens to control aperture. And you will lose autofocus, VR, EXIF communication, flash distance communication, etc. etc. No. You will not have FULL function with an adapter on a Canon body. Anything that relies on the electronic communication between the body and the lens is going to go bye-byes. You can get some stuff back with a chipped adapter to fake some of it, but overall, it's really only worth it with old non-CPU lenses.

Hey. Look at the prices on the 5D Classic. $1000 or so. Nobody says you can't shoot two systems!!

They'll hold value. You could dump 'em, and pick up the Canon 24-70/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM Mark II, and the EF 85mm f/1.2L USM (or hey, 85/1.8 USM). But can't help thinking that just sitting around and waiting for the D800 to arrive is still a better idea. You'll want all the shiny new stuff, and the 5Dii's autofocus system would probably drive you bats.

Besides, PMA@CES is next week. You can hold out for a week to see what the new product announcements bring, right?

Shut up Rob!!

I don't really care what camera system I use, for me it's like having a red shirt of a blue shirt. Depends on the day which one is better.. I think I'll wait to next week before I decide.. I'm just being a spoilt brat..

With your lenses and with what I've read about the D700 I can't see a better choice. Sure there may or may not be a D800 (or such) coming out, but I'll bet that'll be at quite a cost difference to the D700 and whether or not the goodies that come with it will be worth the difference remains to be seen.

Of course if it is miles better and you have the dough then why not?

Hence the "IIRC" qualifier.

The systems trade back and forth every so often....The 5D really has been a killer for Nikon and I suspect the D800 will be meant to directly address the FF high MP at a reasonable price....probably going overboard from what I've seen rumored.
