Hi everyone. I am VERY new to photography. So new that I don't even know what aperture does. (I'm learning!)
I firmly believe that photography is one of those things that you can learn, but you need at least some basic natural talent to ever succeed. I am currently using a point and shoot.. a Canon S95. My picture qualities aren't great, but can you please look at my online portfolio (currently has about 11 or 12 shots) and tell me if you think I'm on the right track? I'd love to get better equipment this year and keep learning. PLEASE check out my shots! Thanks everyone: 500px / karolinak I will be happy to get any feedback so that I can grow. |

You do have an "eye", so I would say you are on the right track.

Those images look pretty good to me.
What you need to do now is decide if you want to open pandora's box and buy a DSLR. There isnt much point in learning anything about Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO. Also the dozens of other topics needed to use the DSLR until you have one. You just wont be able to follow it with a P&S.

I'm guessing from the shots you've taken, your from an art/design background or studying it perhaps?
Composition wise your pretty spot on and the colors and really rich and vibrant! The Canon S95 is probably the best Canon point and shoot, behind the G12. But as stated before you are limited by how much you can do with your equipment, and by looking at your pictures i reckon you have mastered this model. Go buy yourself a DSLR and push your boundaries even further

Thank you for the compliments everyone. It's really inspiring and a relief that you think that I'm doing well so far.
I am NOT an art student or anywhere close. It is a HUGE compliment that you mistook me for one. My hubby has been saying my photography is good, but it's not something I ever thought about before now, and frankly, I've just realized that I have a VERY strong interest in taking this further. I can't wait to see what I can do with better equipment. I will be saving up for a DSLR. In the meantime, I intend to start paying attention to light.. is there anything else I should really practice before I got my first "real" camera? |

You should be familiar with the exposure triangle. Eventually, it will become second nature - Learning about Exposure – The Exposure Triangle
There are tons of assignments to practice on - The Complete List of Assignments
