I am pissed off.
I have been away from this site for a good 6 months I think, perhaps more. I used to enjoy the critique section. Now there appears to be a 'what do you think?' question or no question at all, usually with no exif either. If you want people to put the work in to writing a sensible and honest reply, then at least read the rules and then post. For ****s sake. Rant over, thank you for listening. |

taking the bait, because I couldnt find the 'vent my spleen' section.
Plus, in all honesty, I didnt want to rip into the OP of the latest in a long line of BS critique requests. Even I, in my pissed off state managed to see that this wouldnt have been nice behaviour ![]() I did write a polite message letting them know of the critique rules, and what is required... |

No disrespect Sime, but the reason I stopped critiquing is exactly because of this, and then getting shouted down for insisting on the rules being followed.. Well it looks like the nay sayers have got their wish and the quality of critiques in the critique section has reduced as a consequence. Now it sounds like it's become another "SYS" section.
If you like it that way, fine, but personally I believe it reduces the value of the section to the point where you have the blind leading the blind, and nobody learns anything. I think people should be warned once, and then have non-compliant posts removed. It may be a bit draconian, but people will learn pretty quickly, and it will reduce the number of crappy posts, make people think a bit more abot their photos, improve the feedback that people get because the people providing critiques have less work to do sorting the wheat from the chaff.. We've all got learning to do, but if nobody is learning anything and people are just being lazy then nobody learns, and you know as well as I, there's no shortcuts.. Being lazy as a photographer is not going to help you improve, it's going to help you stay the same or decline because you think you're better than you are. Just my 2€

If I see Windrider has requested they post according the the rules and they don't respond, then I usually won't give a critique. I still think anyone who starts a critique thread should have to view the rules before their post is accepted. If they still can't be bothered to follow the rules, then you have grounds to delete the thread. And I still don't see why it is so difficult to follow a few basic rules.
I also think an additional requirement should be that the OP has to say what they wanted to convey in their shot, otherwise we have to guess and we can't critique as well.

Usually my problem when I ask for a critique is that I give TOO much information lol Plus, I'm getting to the point now that when I specifically go out to take photographs, oftentimes I get results that I, myself, am very pleased with or results that I think are the best that my specific parameters (camera, lens, scenery) are capable of producing.
The very least someone should include is what they were trying to do and EXIF. It's really not that hard. It gets tiring (I admit) seeing posts with "What do you think?" and oftentimes I'm tempted to reply with "I think you should follow the section rules" but that's a bit catty.

My problem with critiques was from the other side. I post a picture with exif data and say "hey what could I have done better?"
Then a bunch of jerks start whining about the rules..."you mean with contrast, composition, depth of field? Tell us what you want critiqued." Umm, whatever part of my picture you think sucks, doofus. That's why it's called a critique, you tell ME what sucks. Everyone thinks differently. Some may be more technical - "hey it's a portrait make sure the eyes are in focus, not her shoulder". Some may be more focused on lighting - "a reflector off the left side would have helped with the shadow there" or other sage advice. I haven't been on it since coming back, either posting or critiquing. I just stick to general, how I did it, and a few others. Fed up with the critiques.

I noticed that as well. While I'm pretty new to posting, I've been browsing for a long time. I generally just skip over ones missing info and only consider ones who look like they've read the rules. I wouldn't be sad if they were just deleted, add a sticky in the section called "why was my post deleted?" and simply put in a link to the rules.
