Default Ouch! Could have been worse

And this is one good example as to why its a good idea to keep a filter on your lens. This was on my 24-70mm lens. I pulled my camera out of my bag and saw the lens cap was jammed into the front of the filter. I cringed and got my husband to help muscle off the cap (it was thoroughly jammed on). The filter was cracked but the lens is fine. Only guess is that one of the kids dropped my bag off the dining room table (where I set it, but found it on the floor, ugh!).

Could have been worse though! Fortunately I have all my equipment insured and our agent said they should be able to get the filter replaced pretty painlessly.

I use a little graphite on the threads on my filters to keep them from jamming.

The filter wasn't jammed... the cap was pushed into the filter which jammed the cap on. Most likely from my camera (in bag) being dropped.

Wine glasses break all the time from falls that wouldn't damage a tumbler. Why do you assume that because a thin piece of glass was broken, a thick piece of glass (the front element of the lens) would have been damaged?

You're going to put in an insurance claim for a filter?

Well, when you don't have extra money laying around to buy a replacement, that's what you do. I suppose I could wait until I had extra money, but that's why I pay for the insurance. All my purchases are well thought out and planned and budgeted for for a long time.

That's fine, just curious. How much is your deductible and how much was the filter?

I'll take a shattered filter over a broken lens with or without insurance any day! That's why I never ever take a lens out without one.

LOL. That filter didn't protect the lens from anything. If it did anything at all, it exposed the lens to pieces of glass.

You might want to check the lens out really well since the shock could have done more damage to the mechanics that it would have done to the front element.
