Default Price check: used 5Dmkii w/ grip

I'm planning on upgrading my camera body soon so I'm willing to give up one of my current cameras. I've got a 5Dmkii and a 60D.

I'm sur ea number of you would say ditch the 60D, but the wife has already laid claim to it.

I think it would be better to have a 7D backup camera vs the 5D, so Im thinking to sell it and get the 7D.

Now I just have to figure out what its worth.

Its less than a year old, maybe 5000 frames, must sell with canon grip, 2 batteries. some wear on the grip, not much wear on the camera.

Anyone know what the resonable resale is on that? I checked ebay, but it has a massive spread and didnt include grip so Its not much for an answer.

Hard to say. The price has dropped off significantly in the last couple months, and I've seen new ones go for as little as $1900. Canon has even released refurbished models for about $1700. If it was me, I wouldn't pay more than $1500-1600.

However, most people aren't me, and I bet you can get at least $2000 for it. A lot of people don't shop around, and will say "Wow! $2000! That's over $3000 worth of stuff new!".

I used to do the same thing with laptops. I'd find a really good deal, buy it, use it for a year, and then sell it for more than I paid for it.

It's not possible to do that with laptops any more.. But you've got to be patient with the electronic goods and know your limits.. I'm after a D700, I'll pay no more than $1700 for an almost new one, no more, I've missed out on a few because I wasn't prepares to win a bidding war.. I know how much I'll pay, if you pay $10 more than that, good for you.. I'll wait.. The price will drop.

Yeah, the laptop market finally settled out, though I did recently sell my 3 year old laptop for $175 (paid $225).

Camera gear prices have been all over the place in the last year due to natural disasters in Asia. My friend "accidently" sold his D700 on Amazon...put it up for a pretty high price, thinking no one would buy it, and someone did. I sold several lenses this year, and only took a minor loss on the ones I bought new, and actually made money on the ones I originally bought used.

In the last couple weeks, prices have dropped off significantly. A lot of lenses are on sale for several hundred off, and there have been stellar deals on camera bodies.

Lol yeah, computer prices have dropped to zero profitability. Just look at ibm and hp. If those two decide its not worth selling em anymore theres a good reason.

I hope this drop in prices is spured by the christmas seaso , if i do sell it, it wont be for a couple months yet. Im still a bit undecided about the 7d though, all the advantages it has over the 60d and 5d are trumped by the one that will replace them. I worry that the long exposure processing time might be as bad As the 60d is. If it is i'll have to forget about it. 20 seconds of processing time on a 30second exposure makes for frustrating night shooting. I'll have to stop by mcbain an test it out.

Do you have noise reduction on? That's probably what's causing your long "processing time". I believe noise reduction takes a second photo with the shutter closed witha similar exposure time as the original, and uses that data to determine the noise in the photo to subtract it out.

I shoot 30 second nighttime exposures with both my 5DII and T1i, and never had a problem. There's a couple seconds between photos, but certainly not 20.

Matter of fact, I do believe its on. I'll have to turn it off and give it a try. Thanks for the tip!

perhaps I'll sell the 5D and buy the wife a t3i. I like the flippy screen on the 60D, but wanted to ditch it because of the long processing time.

The noise reduction takes a second exposure at the same length of time as the initial exposure, just with the shutter closed. That way it can get rid of any electrical noise caused by the sensor heating up. It extends the processing time terribly.. When I turned off "long exposure NR" the camera was ready almost immediately.. Something tells me you won't be selling your 60D next year

If you'd left it on on your new 7D then you'd have been royally pissed

Well it's confirmed. Turning off noise reduction has solved the long processing problem.

I've already been in contact with a vendor about getting the new camera on release. He said that preference will be given to those in canon's professional service members, and those who give large enough deposits. So I guess I'll have to get that done.
