Smile Photography Courses

I'm looking for a well-priced photography course that is either online or within the Ottawa area. There was a link to a school on this site (which I can't find this morning) that looked good, but was wondering if anyone had tried them.

I'd like to hear your experiences.

Thanks
Shelley

What specifically are you looking for in a course? This site has loads of articles for beginners, and the forum has plenty of space for critiques.

Look up SPAO. They have very specific photography courses that may be useful to you. They're located fairly centrally and very well known. If you're willing to travel a bit further form the border with QC, there are diploma programs at both La Cite Collegiale and Algonquin College, though I've yet to see much good work come from the students once they graduate: the programs seem to tell the students theyre great and ready to start their own companies, but dont actually prepare them or teach them how to do so.

Thanks Osmosis Studios.

I live in the "Gatineau Hills" about an hour from Algonquin and Cité Collegiale but work 10 minutes away - so thanks, I haven't seen much that comes from either school either... so I was wondering if it was worth the money (I looked at the Algonquin course). I will look up SPAO.

Nathan Franke:

I'm an amateur looking to learn more about everything... I understand some of the concepts, but need more hands on practice and constructive critism to understand what to change.

Thank you both!

This site can definitely help you with that, without requiring that you spend anything. Do a google search for this: "exposure triangle site:digital-photography-school.com" (without quotes) and read the articles. That'll give you the basic controls for your camera, with examples of how those settings affect the image. Then, post results in the critique forums, and voila: your photographic education begins (it doesn't end).

Paying for a degree is hit-or-miss. Some programs are good, others not so much. If you need a degree, it would make more sense to get one in business, as that's harder to learn about online. But the photography stuff--you can get all that you need from the community here.

SPAO is one of the better ones: it focuses on the art/act of creation and really does help. You can get a business background anywhere, but SPAO actually helps with the craft/vision part of things.

Algonquin and La Cite are both more technique related, and more technical: you'll learn how to use gear, but thats about it.

Don't know about the DPS posted course. But you might do well to check out the Lynda.com courses. Something like 170 hours of photography related courses. I think they have a free trial.
