Default Newbie with a different take...

Hey everyone,

I am knew here, that is to say this is my second post. That said I'd like to share with y'all my plan for this upcoming year and I ask for general feedback from everyone.

I've decided to jump into a 365 this year, but not doing it from a traditional standpoint. I plan on using my favorite camera, my iPhone. This has been a troubling thing for me as I am an avid fan of DSLRs from Canon. I own an older 350D with a handful of goodies to go with it. I'd love to trade up to a 60D or better yet a 5D, however my priorities don't fall in line with that desire.

All of that said, I always have my iPhone with me. There are a few camera apps that allow for better control of the images it creates, though no where near as much as a full blown DSLR. Either way, it can still produce some amazing images.

I'd like to get some feedback on this methodology to my approach to 2012.

SIDE NOTE: I can't wait to dive into some of the assignments...that's what lured me into this site.

.... and exactly how is this a different take?

You and about 4 billion other iPhone sheep out there doing the same thing.

Just make sure to be different.... just like everyone else.

Are you really going to progress more using your iPhone vs. a DSLR? Not what I would choose, but you have to shoot to please yourself.

I've got an idea... what if I try to forward my photography by taking 3 steps backwards!

Yeah, unfortunately it's not that new or different. The goal of most 365s is to become a better photographer, so practicing with different settings is one of the key components. I know the iphone has a billion photography apps, but do any of them help you with aperture or shutter speed? Or do you already have that down pat and need more composition/creativity practice? For that, the iphone might help.

If you're going for new, it might be interesting to buy 12 rolls of 36 exp film, and shoot only 1 photo each day. Get it right in one go, with no idea if you nailed or not until the end of the month when you process the film.

@maxharvard — This is different in the sense that about 4 billion other iPhone sheep do not take advantage of one of the most advanced mobile image sensors. It's different because most people don't commit to limiting themselves when doing a 365. In fact they prefer the opposite. It is quite unlike everyone else.

Try to think of it like an artist attempting to create better color harmony. They will task themselves with composing works only made with a tetrad or triad color scheme; or an author who writes a novel without the letter 'e'. All of these have been done to "better" the individual doing them.

@Krusty79 — I'd say yes, I will progress as I will be challenging myself with something I've never done, and forcing myself to work within the framework of the mobile phone.

@jonbar18 — really? this was very constructive. See paragraph 2 of this reply.

@NathanFranke — To answer your questions I'd say that I do want to focus on composition, but also passion. That's the big part. Ultimately, I shoot more (mostly unintentionally) with the iPhone anyway...so why not be deliberate with it. Also, there are apps that allow the control of aperture and shutter speed, though they are basic in nature. I've actually thought about using a polaroid, and simply doing it daily.

Thank you all for the constructive thoughts (those who were anyway). Additionally, I'd like to clarify that I am a designer by nature and prefer to work in the realm of art, not necessarily within the realm of photography only. This just happens to be one of my favorite areas of life.

I welcome more feedback if you have it. Thank you again.

Interesting, and here I thought that all cameras were mobile.

And "most advanced"? 8MP? Really? The Canon 5D MkII has 21MP and it can be carried pretty easy. Heck, you can pick up a Canon Powershot 100 with 12.2MP for a third of the price of an iPhone.

Its definitely not a new idea, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take a run at it anyway.
