So, I have a photoshoot with EMI music on Monday with an up-and-coming artist. I'm doing photos for the cd booklet and website.
As I usual, I obsessed about this for the last couple of months and have a crapton of ideas already prepared. I've got pages upon pages of photo ideas that's I've been studying and figuring out how to wrap all that into whatever style could be considered 'mine'. I've got locations scouted and chosen (via my proxy in Mexico City where the shoot is). I've communicated with the stylist/publicist. I've arranged for an appropriate time period (1600, sun sets at 1830) The problem is I now feel about as ready as I can be, so I want you guys to throw some more stuff at me in case it inspires me some more. Do you know of any photographers who take kick ass photos that you could see applied to a hip, young (and hot) indie young singer-songwriter? It's going to be shot on the streets of the historic center of Coyoacan (a neighborhood of the city). I have access to cool cobblestone streets, awesome variety of cool colored walls, and a neat subway.. so it's going to be pretty urban.. thought that might help if you think you know someone that might shoot a lot in that style? Otherwise, I'll just go practice my Spanish so that I don't make a fool out of myself! I've never had to say "give me your BlueSteel face!" in Spanish! ![]() This is who I am photographing: ![]()

I've been obsessed with Jim Morrison forever. She has the look to do some of the type of things Joel Brodsky did with him back in 67. Hopefully this may give you some thoughts.

Personally, I think for this kind of genre and setting a mild HDR type of treatment ala Dave Hill would be my direction (some of his lighter stuff).
I'm looking at it as using photography to create the "cover art" more than creating a "cover photograph".

A very good looking person.. So why not cut their head off and make the photo about the music, not the musicians good looks?
![]() I can't really find anything else I like, Indie bands usually show the group in B&W strongly side lit with the lead singer in the middle and the others going off in a circle shot with a wide angle lens.. Pretty Cliche. Steves link is good... Perhaps a bit much on the PP, but pretty damn good work.

A friend of mine idolizes Steve Vai, who according to my google research, is clinically insane.
Friend once showed me a picture of Steve Vai holding a triple neck guitar (configured thusly: --o=) with lighting striking all the heads on the guitar. Google fails me here, however, so I have no link. If that doesn't inspire you, then I don't know what will. |
