Story in nutshell: I'm sort of a n00b, definitely could/should be smarter, recently ordered a Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens, which I (continue to) anxiously await. I must sign for delivery, but it's not altogether convenient to stick around all day. I live alone, don't have anyone else to turn to. So I get on UPS.com, register, use "My UPS" to change delivery to "will call", where I just pick it up at a nearby staffed UPS facility. No problem.
But the package is mysteriously redirected "Return To Sender". Aaargh, I had a feeling changing horses in midstream would be a bad idea and throw a wrench into the works, 'specially this time of year! Dumb Question Time: How do y'all manage UPS deliveries of hi-dollar items that you must sign for .... if you don't have a trusty neighbor or office to involve? Just you, your home, and the big wide world? I've been trying for a week to discover an answer and no luck so far. Every time I talk to a UPS'er I get a different story (I absolve 'em of all sins at xmastime). Epilog to delivery SNAFU: UPS is treating me to 2nd Day Air, should get lens this evening. Will wait for delivery so I can sign for it..........

Check with your local UPS Store about setting up a mail box there, or what they might suggest for issues like this. It may be best to just always set things up to be picked up at that UPS Store.

will call. And I call to talk to a person rather than the internet. They also have UPS MY CHoice where you can have it sent to a local UPS store for will call rather than the UPS freight office. On my choice you can also "pre-sign" for delivery and they will just leave it on you door like a regular package. Note however some shippers will mark the shipment so you can not redirect it or pre-sign. In those cases you are stuck with will call or being home.

I hate UPS.. They deliver an international package, then present you with a Customs bill 1 month later. On one occasion someone omitted a decimal point and I got charged a substantial amount of tax when I shouldn't have been, then got told they would charge me "almost" as much to review the case.
These days I tend to rely on other delivery companies that charge you at the door.. Then if they made a mistake, you can refuse delivery and get a refund. My wife tends to pick up packages for me, or I get them delivered to me at work.. Today I got a Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 delivered to work.. He he, that way my wife doesn't know. (Unless she's reading this! )

Well, UPS promised to re-ship by 2nd Day Air at no charge, and 21 hours later the lens in my hand. Meanwhile, the nice lady at the UPS Freight Center* advises me to call her on the phone next time, and skip the online thing. We're on a first name basis now, and I am strongly considering marrying her to further smooth matters in the future. Thanks, everyone - DPS rocks! *UPS Freight Center, not UPS Store. UPS Store charges for Will Call, UPS Freight Center does not.
