Default Protecting your lenses

Hi,

I'll be travelling to South East Asia for about 5 months coming this January and im concerned about how the humidity will affect my lenses. The relative humidity usually stays over 50% and frequently goes much higher in Thailand (where I'll be spending two months). Should i be concerned about fungus growing in my lens? I don't know how long that sort of thing takes. Do you guys have any preventative measures you would recommend, that you've personally used? Keep in mind I dont have much extra space, i.e. i cant lug around a huge pelican case.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

Not sure... I use a pelican case, and I don't think I would go into an environment like that without it.

I would definitely put lots of sachets of silica in the bag to suck up and absorb any moisture in the bag

Yeah but do i really need something as heavy duty as a pelican? What about those Pelican Desiccants? Would that work if i stuffed it in my camera bag? Would one suffice or should i get a few?

*sigh*

Pelican is the best, period. I use them and i'm not traveling to asia.

Just get the best and be done with it. It's a trivial matter in the long run.

Gotta agree about the Pelican's, but If I'm shooting in the rain or a really damp location, I never put a damp camera or lens in the case until I'm sure it's dried out good.

Them damn Pelican's are air tight. Seems like a good way to get some mold or fungus growing, putting damp gear in one.

That may be so, but not having an air tight pelican for the off chance it needs to dry out is a silly and rare excuse.

Ok pelican rep., duly noted. Now any other recommendations? Preferably from someone who doesnt travel for 5 months with a d3, d200, like 6 lenses, 9 flashs, and a small african slave to help him carry it everywhere, whom also fits into his pelican...

Any word on how well those pelican desiccants work?

Yeah if you're not going to use a Pelican just use billions of Silica gel packets and hope for the best I guess
