Default lens shopping

can i buy a FX lens for a DX camera? I know i'll be throwing some of the ability of the lens away (reduction of image size due to sensor)....but will it work on the camera? then when i upgrade (maybe to D700) i'll have the wide angle that i want so far Tokina makes a f2.4 that i like....others aren't fast enough

FX lenses work on DX cameras, no problem. You do get the crop factor (like any other lens) so choose your lenses accordingly.

What Tokina do you have that you're looking to use?

And just to be clear, you can't go the other way - using a DX on an FX body.

leaning to tokina, sigma or looking for a nikon...i have a 18-55 (kit lens) thats not fast...i want a faster wider angle....looking at wide angle primes and zooms....they look like good lenses (f 2.8) is better than what i have would love even faster...i'm shopping then going to look for second hand lenses for DX format...if i can scrape up the cash for an FX i'll get a non second hand lens

More imortantly what model Nikon do you have? Not all DX models will take a FX lens and be able to use AF.

Default i think i like this one...

now to find a decent 2nd hand one....i rented a nikon 14mm a few months back and was surprised at the lack of "fisheye"....this "ultra wide angle" is a zoom at what point do they become "fisheye" lenses?

Tokina ATX116PRDXN 11-16mm Ultra-wide Angle Nikon Lens

ATX1116PRODXN Tokina 11mm - 16mm F/2.8 ATX Pro DX Autofocus Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras.
