Thanks for the post, Bruce.
Any chance of organising a photo shoot during operations?

Very cool. The nuclear power plant onboard would make me nervous, but otherwise, very cool.

I was able to be on the flight deck of the USS George Washington for an air show. It was an awesome experience. Aside from the awesomeness that is the jets, it was great to be able to get a glimpse into the life of the US Navy.

Here are some of the pictures I took.

I was actually stationed onboard the Stennis when this was filmed. I was one of the folks running around in the green shirts handling the catapults. The flight deck of a carrier is a pretty awe-inspiring place.

As for the nuclear power plants, they are actually incredibly safe. Hubby is a nuclear electrician working on a carrier now. You would not believe the amount of monitoring and systems in place. The naval nuclear power plants have way more safety controls and maintenance being done than most civilian run power plants.

I'm sure Mindy has the real answer, but I think if one did not wear hearing protection on deck while flight operations were in progress one would go deaf in just minutes.

Aha! I thought that was you running around the flight deck in a green shirt

Seriously though, what a responsible job. And thanks for that info, it's nice to know that safety is a major priority.
