"Adde Adesokan of Germany captures beautiful portraits of strangers by snapping three photographs of their head, hands, and feet. The frames are then arranged as triptychs that creatively reveal who the subjects are."

Big Fuzzy wasn't the first person to do this. There's a photographer here in Cedar Rapids that does something very similar, only there's about 50 photos to each person instead of 3. The photos are printed on 4x6 tiles and then arranged on a big board. Very cool stuff. Can't remember when I saw it exactly, but it was at least three years ago, and I'm sure he had been doing it several years before that.
When I saw Big Fuzzy's stuff, I figured he just got the idea from someone else. |

There's a Brit who's pretty famous for it too, David Hockney. Interestingly, a google image search returns this on page one.

A. I certainly was not the first person to ever do triptych nor will I be the last. I've seen it done forever. Though I will say I thought I was doing things a bit differently with the shifting of the frames/camera in my version of montage portraits. I'd like to know if anyone else has done that with the framing/composition/shifting...
B. These are awesome. Never seen them before, glad I have now. Love the way he crops faces that way.. I'd never have thought of doing that because I hate the idea of chopping chins.. but it works great here. I love the stories on his flickr page behind his stranger shots. C. Find me anything today that is truly unique, that no one's done anything like it in the past, and I'll buy you a beer! Of course there are.. I'm being overly dramatic, but I find that it's rarer every day to find something that someone hasn't at least tried photographically. D. PBG - how's "50 photos to each person instead of 3" even remotely "very similar"? I can't imagine a montage of 50 images being even vaguely similar in the outcome to Adde's (or my/anyone else's) work. Would love to see a link.

I do like this kind of photo.. Trouble with photography is these days, it's very difficult to find something that hasn't been done before that looks any good.. Best you can hope for is to refine styles you've seen elsewhere so that yours are personal to you.

It's all good, I already knew I was an unoriginal idea-stealing trash-talking jerk, but I have a nice butt, so that makes up for it.. right?

A little defensive, are we?
I don't have a link from the guy, and I'm having a hard time finding any info. His studio is on the top floor of the Cherry Building in Cedar Rapids, but google searches of that building are kind of hard, thanks to the Occupy Cedar Rapids crowd (protested a company moving there). For all I know, he might not even be there any more. Yes, most ideas in photography are not original, or are twists on a similar idea. In fact, I think I can only claim one truly original idea in all my photography. |
