Default A Question About Selling Cameras

I'm thinking about purchasing a new camera for myself for Christmas this year. It would probably help me a lot, cost-wise, to sell my old camera as well. The thing is, I've never sold a used camera before, so I'm looking for some advice. Those of you who have sold older cameras; how do you determine the correct price, where do you sell them, and what other advice would you give someone like me?

I apologize if this question has been asked before; I searched but couldn't find anything. Thanks for any help you can give!

I would look at completed sales on EBAY, current craiglist listings, and then see ig bhphotovideo or adoroama or amazon or other online vendors have that model used and derive a price form there, then take away 10% because your private party. See what that gets you interest wise....

I just sold my D40, and I basically did what bigben6 advised. I went to eBay, keh.com, and usedcameras.com, and checked their prices for the body and lens separately and as a kit. Then listed it for a good bit less than the high end of what they were going for. It turned out to be about 20% less than the highest recent sale on eBay, but I didn't have to ship it, or pay eBay and PayPal fees.

I've had good luck with craigslist. But Ben's right. Got your answer in one hit.

If it's a popular model, I generally put stuff up at a low price and let it finds its level.. Interestingly, you often find that auctions that start lower end higher than auctions that are priced close to the expected sale price.. With the low starter price stuff the bidders tend to get caught up in bidding wars, determined to beat the other bidder, regardless of what the item is worth, with high starter price items, you tend to get only one or two bids..

Either way is recommended, with the high price you're guaranteed to get a reasonable price IF it sells, with the low price, you risk selling it at stupidly low prices if only one person sees it.. I picked up a newish 70-200 2.8 VR2 like that.. Nobody else had bid on it, and I got it for half what they're welling in shops for.

Thanks for all your advice! My camera is a fairly old Canon Rebel XT, so I'm not expecting much for it, but this should help a lot.

Thanks!!

I look the prevailing sales prices on e-bay and craigslist.com and just kinda average the price. You can also google "used camera prices" or "used D40 prices" and view other site or sales as well.

Another option, if you don't want to sell, is to convert your camera to IR. Costs about 200 bucks, at least on the site I looked at. The conversion will let you hand hold with IR photography, whereas with a filter you'll have to use a tripod and hella long exposure times.
