Default Landmark Destruction

This is really sad to see.

Historic Letchworth bridge is on the edge of elimination - News - The Buffalo News

I've alot of fond memories there, I wish I had a few million to donate to make it into a walking bridge or something...

Its a pity the owners couldn't spend the million they are going to spend dismantling it, fixing it instead. But they can't just walk away and leave it to deteriorate though - who's fault is it then if it collapses with people on it?

Good question - the bridge itself is fenced off, and anyone on it is trespassing. The railroad has prosecuted people for it when caught, but people have (and still do) find their way onto the tracks and walk up to it...

This summer, I ran across a family holding a memorial for someone on the bridge...

I read somewhere that we will not be remembered by the structures we put up, but by the ones we tear down

I live about 40 minutes from this bridge and have photographed it many times. It will be so very sad if they tear it down....

For those of you who live near it or visit often, you should start a petition to have it restored. It doesn't always save the landmark, but if enough people pull together, sometimes it does

Better to spend $1million on renovation and be in the publics good books than to spend $1million on destruction and have everyone hate you. You could even have a public fundraising drive to pay any extra to restore it, or make it a public attraction and charge entry.

I never understood the fascination with places and things. I never cared for where Jimi Hendrix once took a crap or where Eric Clapton once ate a mediocre sandwich.

Places don't make the people who they are, the people become who they are based on their experiences of their experiences.

Yo dawg, I herd u liek places?

Really though, I'm with you on not caring about places based on celebrity status, but I can certainly understand the sentimental mentality of a place you have memories of. Like passing a house you grew up in, places you hung out as a kid, that sort of thing. I'm sure this bridge has that sort of position in the minds of many people that live near there.
