Nice photo. Don't feel bad about the "camera takes good shots". I actually saw an ad in a photography magazine touting how this specific camera takes really good pictures.

thanks. but, seriously!?! a camera does nothing by itself...unless that's the next hot item. automatic cameras- no photographer necessary!

You turn it back on him. Take whatever he does, cooking, carpentry, writing, whatever occupation or hobby he's got and then tell him he's got a nice toaster oven, hammer, or pencil/keyboard. Leave it at that. He'll either figure it out, or you can laugh at him later for not drawing parallels.

The alternative, if you really want to make it personal, is you let him use your "really great camera" and you use his point and shoot. Have a grand competition, and still come back with a better photo.

Tell him you're going to upgrade your pots so you'll be a better cook!

I fully under stand this, I think it applies to me too -- I don't bake very well "because" I don't have a good oven

Ahh.. Just take it as the compliment he meant it as.. We all make mistakes when we compliment people over stuff we don't fully understand.. If you start correcting them, then people will stop paying you complements and just think you're a photo snob.
