Default Young chaps and sophisticated dslrs.

The effect of cheap dslrs nowadays are that more and more people are picking up a dslr, some which pick it up purely for showing off, while others are into photography and are greatful to have a dslr.

The other day i saw one of my friends having a mid-range dslr, considerably big lens, has a lens hood. Thats one good looking setup, but when his flash popped up suddenly, i knew he was using auto.

Whenever i see people with dslrs, I try seeing what mode they're using, if i see its in full auto modes, ill be relieved. (Apparently im very competitive.)

So, what do you guys think about these 'young chaps'?

I currently own and use a Canon 7D - I know how to use it in all modes even auto. Most of the time I have it on M or Av, but on rare occations when I am out it goes on auto and I just shoot it like a P&S camera. Mostly on outings when I am with the misses or other people and keep hearing take my picthure here, and here and over here. It's just not worth the effort of checking the settings, lighting and all for what is most asureably just going to be a snap shot anyway. Waiting to get a G12 so I can have a (high end) P&S camera for these times and as a back up.

Hmmm you seem oddly preoccupied in gear. Which of course isn't too bad, but OTHER PEOPLE`S gear? Do you not have anything better to put your mind to. One thing comes to mind-photography.
Also, what is your reasoning behind targeting this towards "young chaps"? There are plenty of younger people (myself included) that are into photography, and [attempt to] use their gear "properly", and are interested in learning the art. And of course, there are just as many not-young-chaps that use a DSLR to show off, or because they think it will magically make them better, and use the dreaded auto (which does actually have a whole lot of use, even for photographers).

Jonbar - My definition of young here would be really young like my age, around 14.
So theres all sorts of people that buy a dslr for show.
Apparently im very competitive, but now that i just thought about it, if i am competitive i shouldnt be out worrying about being beat, instead just keep learning and stay on top.

brian- Im still in the "get experience" stage, so whenever i get a chance i will take the chance.

that's not very young. At least not to me. I started in photography about 1.5 years a go, and am now 15. Doesn't change anything
Yes, yes you should. How much could it possible matter if some spoiled kid is using auto on some fancy shamcy gear. (hint: not at all). If you care about being better, go get better.

I was shooting, 6x9 camera (dad's), when I was a young teenager. and I purchased my first slr when I was a teenager. I wasn't very sophisticated as it didn't have auto (exposure or focus) and had to use an hand held light meter.
That was 50+ years ago and I am still getting "experinced"

I had no idea that I wasn't alone on this forum, age wise!
At 16, and having been into photography for 4 years, I know where you're coming from. Yes, there'll be irritation that some people have better gear than you, and you feel you'd put it to better use, but learn o make do with what you have, and become friends with them. From experience, it's considerably more satisfying to have your work praised for your efforts than to have all the fancy shmancy gear. Becoming friends with them is a pro, because then you could potentially borrow gear! I've taken advantage of my friend's vast amount of gear quite often, when i absolutely must.

Offfcourse, there are those girls who walk around playing Miss Photographer with Daddy's DSLR that irks me. Not that they are doing that, I have no issues with that, but when they throw it in your face and spout rubbish about their camera being better than yours because the lens is bigger (18-135 vs 50mm... hmmmmmm).

But, just let it by, gear and stuff isn't much of a deal. Take into account they may be learning. Did you shoot manual when you first picked up the camera?

Young fellows? Ever heard of a photographer named Joey L.? The guy shot the Twilight ad campaign when he was still in his teens.
