Default NYPD Clears Zuccotti Park - Occupy Wallstreet

Zuccotti Park Eviction: NYPD Orders Occupy Wall Street Protesters To Temporarily Evacuate Park [LATEST UPDATES]

NYPD IS RAIDING OCCUPY WALL STREET | OccupyWallSt.org

This is absurd...
It's taking a lot right now for me to keep my cool. Please - anyone who's in the area care to elaborate a bit?!

I cannot believe they're doing this. Don't even try to say it wasn't planned that they'd catch everyone in the middle of the night, sleeping, and then restricting press. This is BS and something seriously needs to be done over there...

I think it's absurd too! These bums trashing the parks, crapping in the street, peeing in alleys, all for what? So they can whine about not being rich? Oh boo hoo. Lots of us aren't rich, we don't have to take a dump on wall street. Go home hippie, take a bath.
About time they clear them out. Of course the cold would take care of some of the, and since they are de-evolving into mob mentalities, they might have continued taking each other out.
If you really want to change things, take a clue from the French revolution, build a guillotine and start dragging out congressmen. Otherwise it's just a bunch of bellyaching and whining the rest of us could care less about.

Of course it would have been nice to spend the day there, it might have provided some good opportunities for photos.

They're taking peoples cameras and laptops and throwing them away. They destroyed over 5,000 donated books, they destroyed tents and sleeping bags. I don't care if you don't stand up for the movement, you definitely should stand up for your and other people's rights.

If you would want cops throwing away YOUR gear, then keep your attitude.

Nice to see you're using reliable, unbiased press releases..

The camps have no security, there have been robberies, alleged rapes and suicides.. Get this trash out of there and give the streets back to law abiding citizens.

If the "Occupy" movement is representing 99% then they should respect the law and peoples property, since 99% of us want law and order.. The police may well be disposing of what they perceive to be rubbish, but the people at the camp have been told that this was on the way.. Better the police handling the problem than the criminals.

This is nothing more than a bunch of anarchists causing trouble again.. Nothing new there.

There's a fine line between "occupying the park" and "shantytown". When you start getting your own version of civic services, like libraries, and your own version of commercial services, like stores and restaurants, you're no longer protesting.

While the way they went about it wasnt right, it was necessary: Here in Canada they're doing it the Canadian way - by asking nicely. And it flat-out isn't working. We've had deaths in Toronto and Vancouver, as well as close calls in Ottawa and Halifax. It's gotten silly.

I actually really liked Bloomberg's statement. If you can find it, well worth a read.

The authorities announced they were going to do this over the weekend. It was on NPR and everything. "You must leave the park by 12:01 am, so we can clean it. Anyone still in the park after that time will be subject to arrest. After cleaning is complete, you may return to the park, but may not bring sleeping bags, tarps, or tents."

They got fair warning, so if they chose to ignore it, they did at their own peril. I understand that only 70 people were arrested, so it looks like most of them listened to the warnings.

A judge ruled that the police/mayor had no right to do what he did and they're allowed to reoccupy and bring in tents again.
The cops are also prohibitted from making more laws and using ones put into place after the occupy movement started in order to control the protesters.

Why don't you guys stop worrying about your political views and look at this as it is: Police and our own government taking away our rights as defined by the constitution. Are you saying the NYPD was CORRECT in wrongly arrested around 100 people last night? Are you saying that them beating people was right? Are you saying them destroying books, cameras, computers, and other personal belongings simply because they were on PUBLIC PROPERTY is an okay thing to do?

I'm not trying to start a moral debate here or anything.... But come on... Imagine you were covering this story for your job, and a cop came and threw your camera into the garbage. That is illegal in many ways and now that the judge has said that the cops did what they did unlawfully they'll probably have dozens of lawsuits up against them for damaging and confiscating property without reason.

They arrested someone an hour ago because he had "something in his pocket" and it ended up being his phone. They didn't ask questions, they just took him down, cuffed him, threw him in a van, and drove away. Tell me that is how you want to be treated by the people you're supposed to trust to protect you.

I honestly do not sway to either side of the protest, but I'm wholeheartedly against the stripping of rights. The NYPD is doing nothing BUT. They even stopped civilians who were part of the protest from going to a PUBLIC press release.

Defend the cops all you want, but in the back of your head, do you really think what they're doing is justified?

The park is publicly accessible, but privately owned. The owners can do whatever the hell they want to, and if that means telling the cops to "remove the $%&holes from my lawn," then they can do that.

I do think the authorities are justified. What started as a protest ended up as a hipster shantytown. It was becoming a public nuisance and attracting criminals--whether the crimes were committed by the protestors or just next to them is immaterial.

If you don't listen to cops, you're going to get arrested. Regardless of who's in the right, cops just can't afford to take chances and antagonizing a cop is stupid at best and mortally dangerous at worst.

You'll get no sympathy from me. It's been a month now? Did the protest have a clear goal? What were they protesting? Why pick that location?

The successful protests through history had a clear target, a clear goal, and as far as my school history books went, relatively little cleanup was required. Zucotti park is owned by Brookfield Properties. Were the protestors mad at them for some reason? Did the protestors even know who Brookfield is? Now consider the sit-ins in Greensboro NC. The issue was specifically that Woolworth's would not serve food to black patrons. So they sat there til they got fed. Clear issue, clear victory condition.

Its about time. These people have a right to free speach, but not a right to occupy a private park. Further they should be forced to pay for all the police overtime that is involved with their being there. Any other group that goes and gets a permit is required to pay for support services provided by the city - why not them -- exactly. Goodbye for good hopefully.
