I have to say, built-in flash is really only ever 'useful' to use as fill-flash or if you're desperate and have nothing else to use in low-light situations. Otherwise, it's really highly recommended to have an external flash. Even if you can't get it off camera yet, at least you can creatively bounce light off with an external flash. Anything just to get off using direct flash on subjects.

I'm sorry I can't recommend any links for built-in flash; I haven't seen any worth sharing.

The first thing you'll notice using an external flash is the less chance of red eye!

I use the built in flash with a diffuser for macro shots. Its much easier to use that than have the extra weight of an external flash. Of course, for portrait work, I use off camera flash or studio strobes. Just saying, the pop-up flash has its uses.

I suggest reading up on fill flash.

There are times I use the on-camera for fill flash if I don't have the SB-400 on the camera.

If you're stuck with pop-up flash and you're shooting indoors with a white ceiling....

A pop up flash has its uses if it stands between a photo or no photo. I use it when I want to take photos of my kittens playing in my dimly lit living room. I don't have fast glass and fiddling with an external speedlight just isn't an option because its just one more hassle. If you want a quick snap shot then full auto and the pop up flash is your friend

Well, not quite the info I was hoping for, but it looks like the consensus is the same. Off Camera Flash I guess is the way to go.

Thanks all!
