Default setting exposure compensation: help?

Hello all,

I wasn't sure where this topic would be best, so I just threw it in here. I just got a Canon rebel xsi and it's my first DSLR. I was playing around in manual mode and I'm not sure what I did, but my photos were suddenly all just black. I now realize that my exposure compensation is set to -2. I went through the instruction manual to find out how to set it to zero, and it says to hold down and turn the dial. When I do this, it just switches from setting the shutter speed to setting the aperature and the dial adjusts these. In every other mode, exposure compensation is set to zero, except in "M" it is set to -2 and I cannot seem to get it back to zero.

Suggestions? I'm hoping this is a simple fix and I haven't really screwed the settings up by being a newbie and playing around with the camera.

There is no exposure compensation in Manual. The -2 you are seeing is you having set the exposure 2 stops lower than what the meter thinks is the right exposure.

There is no in camera exposure compensation in manual mode as you control everything.

To get a "standard" exposure (as indicated by the camera) just set the aperture/shutter speed/ISO so the needle is centred. If you decide you need to deviate from the cameras indication just adjust the shutter speed/aperture accordingly.

Am I missing something guys?
I believe you can set the exposure compensation to +/- in manual mode, and if you do the meter will center (show correct exposure) when that offset is achieved....

Not on my Canon DSLRs.
Even on my Canon G11, when in manual mode, the exposure compensation dial does nothing.

Looks like you have to push the Av +/- button and turn the top dial simultaneously.

Hmm, Canon thing I guess....
On my G10 it just puts a little green index point on the meter scale.
Sorry for the misinformation.

Not on my D3100.
I think that's only for higher end cameras. Or maybe ones with dual dials.

That's how you adjust the aperture.
See page 75 of the (English) manual.
