low key photography problem

hey, im trying to do some low key shots using my sb900 wireless as my sole light source.
however the built in flash on my d90 keeps firing, lighting the whole subject and the background. I know the flash has to pop to control the off camera flash, but can anyone tell me what im doing wrong.

sounds like your pop-up flash isn't set to wireless commander mode

In your flash commander mode settings, (custom setting e3) set the built in to " --" (zero output)
