If anyone is starting out or relatively new, you may want to check out this interview. A summary of a photographer's experience who just retired (can a photog ever retire?
)Patrick Eagar is a cricket photographer. Patrick Eagar: 'You need to be broad-minded as a cricket photographer' | Specials | Cricinfo Magazine | ESPN Cricinfo One of his statement was "I wish I had bought better lenses earlier on". I have heard this advice so many times. However, it is true only when you start taking professional assignments in whatever field you are in. As long as you are just starting out and getting a feel for what you want to do in photography or even if you figuring out whether photography is for you or not, I think it is ok to have cheaper lenses that cover a wide range. Wulf once gave me this advice and I followed it. I still think it was a good advice.

I like your statement " I think it is ok to have cheaper lenses that cover a wide range" until one finds what type of photography one wants to concentrate on. I plan on waiting for the one year photography mark before deciding on obtaining better/faster glass.
Right now my main interests are land/cityscape, sports/action. I'm leaning toward another telephoto zoom to 300mm with IS and f4 the entire focal range. Already saving the pennies.
