Default D700 or D800

Ok, the stats on the new D800 look pretty cool, but that means that the price on the D700 should drop fairly sharply when the D800 is released.

I'm looking for a Full Fram camera to do my Landscape photos on, I like the fact that it will give me much higher quality photos on my FX lenses, primarily due to the fact that the pixels are larger (about twice the size) than my D7000, so the sharpness of the lenses should be that much better.

The D700 will get into my pricerange fairly soon. I can probably afford to buy it and keep my D7000 just around Xmas.

As an alternative, the D800 is due to be released next week. Rumours have it that this little baby will have that much more than the D700... 36Mpx gives a 3 fold increase, but that means that any problems with my lens will start to show. Each pixel is 2/3rds the size of my D7000. It's also a lot more expensive, and to get it I'll have to sell a few things. But hey, that's not such a bad thing, I've got too many "Things" anyhow.

So here's the question..

Would you a) Sell the D7000 and buy in, lock stock and barrel into full frame. b) Keep the D7000 for long lens work and buy a s/hand D700, c) Do neither and be happy with what I've got?

I am very anxious to see the outcome of this discussion....

I currently have a D80 and are looking into upgrade within a year or so. I would like to go full frame, however those cameras are still very expensive. So if the price drops for the D700 would you go with it or the D800 with it's new massive sensor?

I realize that either would be a massive step up, on the other side I am also not one that can afford to buy a new camera every other year when an upgrade or new model from Nikon hits the shelf.

(Not trying to hijack this thread, just anxious to see the outcome of the poll.)

I would keep the D7000 and get a D700.
My reasoning is quite simple.
  • Unless you want to print something billboard-size, there's no real need for that much MP. Not to mention the fact that your files size will increase exponentially and so will time spent on PP waiting for Photoshop or Lightroom to do it's thing.
  • Having both bodies will give you an FX and a DX, therefore the best of both worlds.
  • You'll have a spare body in case anything happens (your streak of luck with your equipment may not last).
But that's just my 2 cents...

Hey.. my luck ain't so bad.. I won $50 on the lottery on Friday!!

And I could have lost my big lens and broken my wide angle one.. Neither of which happened.. I wouldn't say I'm having bad luck, I'd say I was just being a bit careless cos of the long hours I do at work.

Having a back up is a good idea... However if it was me (and it's not) I'd get the D800, why not bite the bullet and get the newest technology? If you do decide to go the D700 route, be keen on snapping one up as I don't think there are a lot in the pipeline...at least not over here...

edit: I just googled it and reports are it will be a 36megapixel $4000 unit with nothing special for low light. Geared more as a studio camera than a pro-sumer.
If that's the case, give me a d700.

I`d say get a D700 and keep the D7000 too. Not a huge advantage with the D800. 36 MP MIGHT come in handy when doing huge prints, but hey, there were billboards way back in the 3MP days. Plus memory is going to get A LOT more expensive because of file size. I`m not even sure why they think people need that. Most rumours claim not a lot gained in low light performance either.
Plus a backup is always good (for you, of all people), and it could help in shooting wildlife or whatever, when you need more reach.

I'd probably just hang onto the D7000 and wait to see what happens. It's not like the D7000 isn't a really good camera.

I concur, and if the keeping the cash is really killing you, you can send it here and i'll use it for something worthwhile...like lap dances,as the warden is away for a couple of days.

did i say warden? I meant loving wife

Umm... when did it get announced? Personally, I don't believe any speculation on any camera until the official announcement is out. Unless Thom Hogan is giving you numbers he says are real.

Possible. But unlikely. Unless a huge number of folks decide to trade in their D700s for a brand new D800 the day of release. Used market is unlikely to be flooded immediately, and the price is more likely to gradually decrease, not just drop off a cliff. Most of the time when you watch the price of a camera fall over time, it's pretty linear.

Not to mention the fact that a lot of people will be looking to keep their D700 as a low-light body and get a D800 as a high-res body. Similar to many using D3s/D3x combos.
